Bernardo – Denied Parole

 

It took just 30 minutes yesterday for the National Parole Board to reject serial rapist and killer Paul Bernardo’s request for parole. The 54-year-old has spent 25 years in prison and argued during his hearing at Millhaven Institution he has worked hard to change his ways.

The lawyer for the families of murder victims Leslie Mahaffy and Kristen French says Bernardo is a psychopath.  Tim Danson says there wasn’t really anything Bernardo could have said yesterday that would have made a difference to them

Bernardo has served 25 years in prison for the murders of Mahaffy and French and for multiple rapes in east Toronto.

 

Transport Crash

 

The OPP has identified the victim of a fatal crash involving a transport truck on the 401 in Napanee as the 71 year old driver of the truck.  Ronald Brault of Quebec died in the crash on Tuesday afternoon.

The OPP says there were no other injuries in the crash.  The 401 eastbound was closed until shortly after 8:00 a.m. yesterday.

 

Family Dispute

 

A 33 year old woman from Stone Mills Township is facing charges after a family dispute in Newburgh.

The OPP says it was called to investigate at 9:20 p.m. on Wednesday.

The woman was arrested and faces charges of mischief, dangerous driving and two counts of assault.  She was released on a promise to appear in court in Napanee on November 2nd.

 

Arson

 

Kingston Police have charged a 60 year old man with arson after a fence was set on fire with Molotov cocktails.

Police say the man was captured on surveillance video behind a housing complex on Montreal Street on September 28th.  When the fence caught fire he ran from the area.  Police were able to identify the man from the video and issued a warrant for his arrest.  Police arrested the man on Tuesday morning after he had been discharged from hospital.

 

CANARIE – Grants

 

A Queen’s University Research team is getting funding to develop a 3D image slicer for guided radiation therapy used in over half of all cancer treatments.  The Queen’s group is one of 20 teams in Canada to receive funding through a research network called CANARIE.  A news release says the team at Queens is getting funding to develop a feature-rich platform designed to support 3D image analysis and visualization for cancer treatments.

 

Lowe’s Canada Heroes

 

Two organizations in Kingston are benefiting from the Lowe’s Canada Heroes campaign.  Lowe’s and Rona employees have collected donations to help local non-profit organizations.

Habitat for Humanity is getting just under $8,400 and the Kingston Youth Shelter is getting almost $6,200 thanks to the fund raising campaign.
