Millhaven Guards – Paddle

 

Two correctional officers from Millhaven Institution are on a 202 kilometre paddling journey from Kingston to Ottawa.

Jason Godin and Evan Orsy began The Paddle for PTSD yesterday.  They’re raising funds and awareness for people who live with post-traumatic stress disorder.

The Paddle for PTSD trip has already surpassed its goal of raising $2,500 for TEMA…a Canadian organization that helps first responders dealing with post-traumatic stress disorder.

 

Napanee – People Power Press

 

A Napanee company says it will be able to better serve its expanding markets thanks to $20,000 in funding from the Eastern Ontario Development Program.  People Power Press is buying new equipment with the funding and says it will be hiring new staff.  People Power Press develops designs that are printed on postcards, buttons, signs, and other branded goods.

 

Food Access

 

A new program is being launched today to make fresh produce more accessible to people in the region.

Tony Deodato & Sons Ltd. is supplying the fresh produce that will be sold at a reduced price at 5 high schools in the region.  The Good Food Stand will be at Regi on Mondays, Sydenham High on Tuesdays, Napanee District Secondary on Wednesdays, LaSalle Secondary on Thursdays and Bayridge Secondary on Fridays once a month for the next year.  It starts at Regi from 3:00 to 5:30 today.  The initiative is co-funded by the United Way and City of Kingston.

Monday – Dog Park

 

South Frontenac is getting a dog park.  The official opening of the special area to let dogs run free will take place on Friday in Centennial Park in Harrowsmith.

The 1 acre space features a five foot high chain link fence behind the multiuse sport pad at the back of Centennial Park.  South Frontenac Mayor Ron Vandewal will host the opening ceremony at 1p.m. on Friday.

 

Bassmasters Wrap

 

The Bassmasters Elite series championship wrapped up in the Thousand Islands on Sunday with an angler from San Tan Valley, Arizona winning the $100,000 top prize.

Josh Bertrand landed a five bass limit that weighed 23 pounds and one ounce on Sunday to capture the victory at the tournament in Waddington, New York…across the St. Lawrence River from Morrisburg.

Brett Hite of Phoenix, Arizona received $1,500 as the winner of the Big Bass award. He had the largest bass of the tournament with a 6 pound 12 ounce smallmouth on Thursday’s opening round.

 

 

Lottery Wins

 

35 year old Dwayne Scott of Kingston is the winner of ae POKER LOTTO ALL IN jackpot worth over $178 thousand.  Scott won the jackpot on August 13th and won $5,000 on the instant portion of his POKER LOTTO play.  He bought the winning ticket at Barriefield Convenience on Highway 15.  Scott says he’ll invest in his exterminators business and share with family.

 

An 18 year old man from Trenton has won the lottery with his first ever ticket.  Joshua Allison was convinced to buy the Lotto 6-49 ticket on August 18th because he had just turned to legal age to buy lottery tickets.  He won over $68,000 in the draw.  Allison says he plans to take his family on a cruise and use some of the money for his education at Loyalist College in Belleville.

It was on this day in 1758, Fort Frontenac, was captured and destroyed by the British. The site of the present City of Kingston was picked by LaSalle in 1673, and the explorer was named commandant of the French camp. After being captured by the British it was renamed Kingston and became the chief naval base of Ontario.
