New Catholic School – Name

The new Catholic elementary school in Kingston will be called St. Francis of Assisi Catholic School.  The school’s naming committee received 68 submissions for names and 41 of those were unique names.

The new school replaces Holy Family, St. Peter and St. Patrick Catholic Schools.  It’s scheduled to open in September of 2017.

Balanced Budget

The Catholic School Board has approved a balanced budget.

Trustees with the Algonquin and Lakeshore Board approved the operating budget of $145.5 million and the capital budget of $8.6 million on their meeting this week.

The board says the budget continues to be a challenge because of declining enrolment.

CFB Trenton – Death

The OPP says foul play is not suspected in the death of a 32 year old woman at CFB Trenton.

A post mortem was conducted yesterday on the body of Jasmine Reid of Trenton.  Reid was living at the base with her common law spouse who is a member of the military.

Big Rig Rollover – Charges

The driver of the big rig that rolled over blocking the 401 eastbound off-ramp at Gardiners Road Tuesday night has been charged with careless driving.

The truck was exiting the ramp when it rolled onto its side…trapping the driver.

Paramedics said the man suffered serious injuries but police say he was treated for minor injuries and released from hospital.

Exercise Equipment – Assault

A 46-year-old Kingston woman is facing charges of assault and breach of probation after her female roommate was injured with an exercise band.  Officers went to a Johnson Street home shortly after midnight yesterday after the pair got into an argument.  An hour later paramedics were called to the same home and found a 39-year-old woman bleeding from a head wound.  Investigators say she’d been hit with a braided rope with a metal carabiner and ring on both ends.

Stunt Driving

Speeding is going to be costly for this guy from Inverary.

The 30-year-old man has been charged with speeding and stunt driving after police clocked a pickup going at 111 km/h in a 50 zone on Jackson Mills Road around 6:15 p.m. Tuesday.

The vehicle and the man’s license have been seized for a week and if he’s convicted of stunt driving he faces a minimum fine of $2,000.

Tornado Inspection

Severe damage in the area of Sandhurst Shores…south of Napanee…may have been caused by a tornado on Tuesday night.  Environment Canada says investigators are trying to determine if a tornado was responsible.  It is also investigating reports of a possible tornado causing extensive damage near Marmora, and Havelock.

Minor Drought Continues

Despite the recent rain…the Cataraqui Region Conservation Authority says the region is still suffering from minor drought conditions.  The authority is asking you to limit the amount of water you use by cutting back on watering lawns and gardens and not washing vehicles or driveways.

Friday – Dine Out Day

Big Brothers, Big Sister of KFL&A is encouraging people to take part in its 2nd annual Dine-Out- Day tomorrow by planning on dining out today.

Sixteen restaurants are supporting the fund raising driver for the organization…15 are in Kingston and one is in Napanee.

Big Brothers, Big Sisters says it is a great way to celebrate the first Friday of Summer.
