Council – 2nd Walmart

Attention Walmart shoppers.

Construction on Kingston’s second Walmart should begin soon after it got the thumbs up from city council.

Council voted unanimously in favour of the zoning and official plan amendments last night.

The new store will be built in the former quarry off of Division Street near the 401.

It used to be the home of a soccer dome.

Future Kingston

The battle lines are forming over high rise development in downtown Kingston.

A new group in favour of what’s called…intensification in the downtown…has come forward.

The group calling itself Future Kingston is getting administrative support from the Greater Kingston Chamber of Commerce and Downtown Kingston Business Association.

A news release says it is made up of people who believe in a progressive, authentic, living and changing Kingston.  It goes on to say they believe high rises are an astounding opportunity and it is time to seize that opportunity.

A group made up of community organizations called The Coalition of Kingston Communities has come out against the high rise developments.  It says they will detract from the low rise historic downtown.

Drug Bust

Kingston Police have wrapped up a drug trafficking investigation with the arrest of a 23 year old Kingston man.  Police seized marijuana, cocaine, crystal meth and a variety of pills including ecstasy from a home on University Avenue near Brock Street on Monday.

The man is facing six counts of Possession of a Controlled Substance for the Purpose of Trafficking and one count of Possession of Proceeds of Crime.

Crystal Meth – Arrests

Two people have been arrested after an argument fueled by crystal meth led to a man punching himself in the face so hard he had to go to hospital.  The man injured an eye and his nose around 11 Monday night after getting into an argument with a female friend.

Kingston Police say the 35 year old woman was arrested at the scene and the 39 year old man was arrested in hospital.  Both had outstanding warrants for shoplifting from the Kingston Centre Loblaws.

Pharmacy Robbery

A 52 year old inmate at the halfway house at Collins Bay has been charged with robbing the pharmacy at Food Basics – across Bath Road from the prison.

A man handed the pharmacist a note on Monday afternoon saying he was conducting a robbery.  He was asked to wait and took a seat.

Police were called and the man was arrested without incident.

He had been sentenced to six years in prison for a 2009 robbery in Toronto and was on statutory release at the halfway house across the road.

Minor Drought Continues

The rain we have received over the past few days hasn’t relieved minor drought conditions according to the Cataraqui Region Conservation Authority.  It says between 20 and 50mm of rain fell across the region…but it has still received about 50mm less than normal over the past three months.

It is asking people to continue conserving water.

Kingston Food Tours

A new business venture featuring local restaurants and specialty food stores kicks off today.  Kingston Food Tours will be offering guided tours of the downtown.
