Ice Storm

There was some wild weather this morning in the region.

Thunder and lightning accompanied rain in the area after freezing rain yesterday afternoon and overnight.

The two agencies responsible for school transportation in the region cancelled transportation for the second day in a row due to the weather.

Tri-Board Student Transportation cancelled buses this morning for the Limestone District School Board, Algonquin and Lakeshore Catholic District Board and the Hastings – Prince Edward District Board.

Student Transportation of Eastern Ontario also cancelled transportation for the Upper Canada District Board and Catholic District Board of Eastern Ontario.

Flu Closes Collins Bay

The flu is responsible for the cancellation of visits for inmates in the medium security unit at Collins Bay Institution.

The Correctional Service issued a notice yesterday saying due to several inmates showing symptoms associated with the influenza virus…all visits to the Collins Bay Institution Medium Unit are suspended as a precautionary measure.

Apartment Vacancy Rates

Kingston City Council will be asked to approve Kingston’s participation in a program to attract developers to build more rental units.

The province is providing funds to help municipalities give developers a rebate on development charges.

The vacancy rate for rental properties in Kingston is 0.7%…the worst it has been in Kingston for over 30 years.

Child Pornography – Charges

A 37-year-old Kingston man has been charged in an investigation into the sharing of child pornography.

A news release says detectives with the Internet Child Exploitation Unit were able to identify a suspect after beginning their investigation on January 7th.  A search warrant was executed at a home on January 19th where multiple digital devices were seized.

The man has been charged with making available child pornography, possessing child pornography, and accessing child pornography.

Road Rage – 13 year old Assaulted

A 46 year old Kingston man has been charged with assaulting and threatening a 13 year old boy in a road rage incident.  Police say the man was made threats and yelled racial remarks at another man on Saturday morning after a near collision in a parking lot at Bayridge Drive and Taylor Kidd Boulevard.

A 13 year old boy told the man not to speak to his father like that and was grabbed by the throat.  People passing by intervened.  The man was arrested at his home later in the day.

Arrests – Queen’s

Two 31 year old men from Kingston have been arrested in separate incidents at Queen’s University.

One was arrested after campus security found him in the library at 7:45 Sunday morning.  He’s been charged with theft, two counts of possession of stolen property and two counts of breach probation.

The other man was found inside a Queen’s building at 1:45 in the morning on Saturday.  He’s charged with possession of break-in tools and failing to appear in court in Cornwall.

Stranger in Bathtub

A 42 year old Kingston woman is facing charges after police say she was found naked in a stranger’s bathtub.  Investigators say the woman was found lounging in the unfilled tub when the resident arrived home around 6:15 Sunday night.  They say the woman tried to convince the resident that she was her new roommate.  The woman was still in the tub when officers arrived at the scene.   She has been charged with being in a dwelling unit unlawfully and breach of probation.
