Gold Standard – Skin Cancer Surgery

Kingston is home to a new surgery program that will provide the gold standard treatment for skin cancer.  A new micrographic surgery program has opened at Hotel Dieu Hospital.  Hotel Dieu is one of only 13 hospitals in Canada to offer the program.

Officials say the microsurgery program has a 99% cure rate for basal cell cancers and a 97% cure rate for squamous cell carcinomas.

It’s especially effective on aggressive skin cancers and can be performed on an outpatient basis with the use of local anesthetic.

 Wolfe Islander – Delayed Again

People who use the Wolfe Island Ferry, the ferry to Amherst Island and the Glenora Ferry have received more bad news.

The Ministry of Transportation has announced the Wolfe Islander III will not be returning to service the week following Labour Day and it says there is no estimated date for it to be back from dry dock in Hamilton.  MTO says the delay has been caused in work to upgrade the ferry’s wheelhouse.

Until the work is finished…the Frontenac II will continue providing service from Kingston to Dawson Point.  The Quinte Loyalist will remain in service for Amherst Island…and 30 minute single ferry service will continue at the Glenora operation.

Hydro One says a switch connecting it to Utilities Kingston at its Gardiners Road transmission station failed yesterday afternoon.

Power went out in a widespread area of Kingston at about 2:15 p.m.  Power was restored to Utilities Kingston customers about an hour later.  Hydro One customers in the west end were not affected.
