Kingston – Bridge Approved

Kingston City Council has voted 8-5 in favour of spending $60 million to build the bridge over the Cataraqui River.

Councillors Peter Stroud, Jim Neill, Mary Rita Holland, Rob Hutchison and Jeff McLaren voted against the Third Crossing at the special meeting of Kingston city council last night.

The city now has to secure $60 million dollars in funding from the federal government.  The province announced on Tuesday it give the project up to $60 million dollars.

Stroud and Holland – Pub Visit

Let’s call it Pubgate.

Two city councillors are catching some heat because they left Tuesday night’s council meeting on the Third Crossing while staff were briefing council.  Peter Stroud and Mary Rita Holland went to the Tir Nan Og pub for a break during the session.

An email to the Mayor, City Clerk and councillors says it showed a lack of respect for staff and other councillors.

Stroud says he has apologized to the person who sent the email and will apologize to staff.

The Whig Standard reports Mary Rita Holland has declined to comment.

Sexual Assault

A 51 year old Kingston man is facing seven sex related charges stemming from incidents that happened 36 years ago.

Kingston Police say they opened the investigation in mid-March after receiving information about sexual assaults that took place in 1981.

A news release says both the accused and the victim were youths at the time.

The man was arrested Tuesday morning.

First Capital

Kingston is celebrating the 176th anniversary of being the First Capital of Canada today.

The city has activities planned in City Park from 9:30 this morning until 2:00 this afternoon to mark the anniversary.

Mayor Paterson, Chief Jim Bob Marsden of the Alderville First Nation and Town Crier Chris Whyman will kick things off at the opening ceremonies scheduled for 9:45 this morning.

Kingston became the first capital in 1841.  The capital was moved to Montreal three years later.

St. Lawrence Grad

St. Lawrence College is holding its 50th anniversary convocation ceremonies tonight and tomorrow at the Rogers K-Rock Centre.

Members of the first graduating class of 1969 will be celebrating will be dressed in golden convocations gowns as a symbol of the milestone.

There are three separate ceremonies starting with the one today at 6 p.m.

Lawn Watering Restrictions

Kingston’s lawn watering restrictions start today.

Utilities Kingston says despite all of the rain this spring it is still important to conserve water.

The restrictions mean residents and businesses with odd-numbered addresses are allowed to water on odd-numbered days, while those with even number get to water on even-numbered days.

And…A lawn sprinkler can only be used between 5 am and 10 am on your designated days.
