Phoenix Office

Federal government employees in Kingston who have been hit by problems with the Phoenix pay system will be getting some help soon.

The federal government is opening an office at 294 King Street to deal with the problems public servants are facing in Kingston.  No date has been set for the office to open but when it does it will deal with payroll problems faced by employees of the Correctional Service and civilian employees at CFB Kingston.

City Council – Nominations

Nominations are now open to fill the empty seat at Kingston City Council for Countryside District. A by-election is being held to fill the position left vacant when councillor Richard Allen resigned to become Manager of Economic Development in Frontenac County.

Nominations papers and a $100 filing fee have to be submitted to the city clerk’s office before 2 p.m. on Friday, March 31st.

An information session for people interested in running in Countryside District will be held March 1^st from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Glenburnie Fire Hall.

Sexual Assault – Ride Sharing

Kingston Police have charged a man who claimed to be the driver for a ride-sharing service with sexual assault.  Police say a woman was out with friends at a bar on Saturday night and had a friend call a ride-sharing service to take her home.  Police say the woman got into a man’s vehicle when he claimed he was her driver.  They say she was sexually assaulted in the vehicle.

A 28 year old man was arrested around 10 p.m. Saturday and charged with sexual assault.

Drugs and Guns

Two people from Kingston and three from Deseronto are facing charges after drugs and guns were seized in police raids.

The OPP and Belleville police executed search warrants and made traffic stops on the 401 and in Napanee on Friday.

Two firearms were seized along with 100 Oxycodone pills and 356 Hydromorphone pills.

49 year old Trevor Haigh of Kingston and 37 year old Amanda Walsh of Kingston face drug trafficking charges along with 64 year old Robert Hussey, 57 year old Karen Hussey and 41 year old Ronald Hussey of Deseronto.

The Hussey’s also face weapons charges.

Arrests – John F. Scott Rd

A man and a woman have been arrested on outstanding warrants after a single vehicle crash on John F. Scott Road.  Kingston Police closed a section of the road at around 10 a.m. yesterday.  Police had to use a tracking dog to find the occupants of the vehicle who had taken off.

Family Advocacy

Family and Children’s Services of Kingston, Frontenac, Lennox and Addington is handing out its fourth Annual Family Advocacy Award today.

Executive Director Steve Woodman will give this year’s award to the committee coordinating Kingston’s efforts to help Syrian Refugees.   The ceremony takes place this morning at the Kingston Community Health Centre office.

The award recognizes an individual group or organization for their contribution to making the lives of families in KFL&A better.
