Gas Leak

 

A major leak of natural gas closed highway 2 west of Odessa this morning.

The gas leak from the Union Gas substation in Odessa was reported shortly after six this morning.

Highway 2 was closed from County Road 4 to County Road 6, and Loyalist Fire evacuated residents within an 800 metre radius. Union Gas has made the repair and the evacuation order has been lifted.

 

PSAC – Contract Agreement

 

A tentative contract agreement has been reached between the federal government and 68 thousand of its public servants. The Public Service Alliance of Canada says the deal includes a pay hike of 5.5 per cent over the four years, plus a 650 dollar signing bonus.  The workers covered by the agreement include administration and support staff and communications employees.  The Public Service Alliance still has to negotiate contracts for another 30 thousand of its members.

 

Belle Park

 

The future of Kingston’s municipal golf course may not include golf.

City Staff will be asking Kingston City Council for permission to look into options to reduce, modify or eliminate golf at Belle Park.  Council will consider the request when it meets tomorrow night.  If it approves the request there will be a public consultation process before a decision is made on the future use of the park built on top of a former garbage dump.

 

Multiple Robberies – Arrest

 

A 30-year-old man from Gatineau has been arrested for a bank robbery in Kingston and six other bank robberies.

The man was arrested by the OPP at the On Route near Trenton after bank robberies in Bowmanville and Cobourg on Friday.  He’s the suspect in the robbery of the National Bank in Kingston on August 25th and robberies of banks in Napanee, Trenton, Oshawa, Richmond Hill and the two banks on Friday.

On this day in 1843, “A Christmas Carol,” by Charles Dickens, was first published in England. The tale of Ebenezer Scrooge’s spiritual conversion on Christmas Eve has been a Christmas classic ever since.

And…On this day in 1917, the first National Hockey League games were played. All four teams played, with the Montreal Canadiens hosting the Toronto Arenas and the Ottawa Senators at home against the Montreal Wanderers.
