Roads – Snow

Roads were slushy and slippery this morning.  The morning started with snow covered, snow packed and slippery sections on roads and highways throughout the area.

There were several collisions reported due to the conditions.

School buses

Snow did lead to the cancellation of school buses to the North Addington Education Centre in Cloyne.  There were also several other cancellations and a few buses that were running late this morning.

Fatal Crash – Millhaven

The driver of a vehicle that hit a pole on County Road 4 in Millhaven died in the crash.  Police responded to a call about a crash at 1:50 Saturday morning.  The driver was ejected from the vehicle and it was fully engulfed in flames when emergency crews arrived.

The name of the driver who died has not been released.

Carbon Tax – Gas Bills

Survey says…you want the cost of cap and trade clearly displayed on your natural gas bill.

Ontario’s scheme to sell pollution credits is expected to add about five-dollars a month to you natural gas bill.  The auditor general did the survey and 89% want the charge clearly listed on their bill…But…the current plan is to bury it in the “delivery” line on natural gas bills.

Pole Replacement

Work is underway to replace utility poles and upgrade overhead power lines in Williamsville District. 20 new transformers will also be installed between now and March of 2017.  It’s part of a Kingston Hydro five year capital program.  Utilities Kingston says it will mean some power outages and tree trimming to make way for the new poles and lines.  Crews were working on Regent and Park Streets to replace poles on the weekend.

Blasting – CFB Kingston

Blasting will be taking place at CFB Kingston starting today.

The base is warning residents about the work to clear granite for the foundations of a new facility.

A siren will sound before each of the six daily blasts near the intersection of Apprentice Street and Craftsman Boulevard.  The word is scheduled to last for up to 15 days.

Unemployment Rate

The jobless rate in Kingston remains below 6%.

Stats Canada issues the seasonally adjusted numbers on Friday and the rate in Kingston was 5.7% in November…an increase of a tenth of a percentage point from October.

The announcement of a Chinese baby formula factory to be built in Kingston will help stabilize employment levels.  The $225 million dollar facility will create over 200.

Impaired Driving

Prince Edward County OPP say a 54 year old man from Bloomfield has been charged after failing to stop at a RIDE check in Rossmore around 1am Sunday.

Thomas Buckley faces a charge of impaired driving and three counts of driving while suspended.

A 16 year old driver from Wellington had his license suspended for three days and was ticketed after police smelled alcohol on his breath at a RIDE check at around 10pm Saturday.
