Wet Weather

After one of the worst droughts ever…the region is going to get a soaking starting today.

Environment Canada has issued a rainfall warning with heavy rainfall in the forecast for tonight.

Forecasters say there’s the possibility of 45 to 70mm of rain today, tonight and tomorrow.

No Increase – Hydro Rates

Finally some relief on electricity rates….The Ontario Energy Board says it is holding the line on rates for about five million Ontario households and small business customers.  It’s the first time since 2008 rates won’t increase on November 1st.  But there will be an added charge when the province introduces carbon pricing in the New Year.

High Rise Chill

There’s a chill in the air over high rise development in Kingston with four appeals of the 15 storey Capitol condominium now on the books.

City council was informed by staff on Tuesday night the appeals process could take up to two years.

The Frontenac Heritage Foundation has announced it is appealing the decision by city council to approve the development.

Former city councillor Vicki Schmolka filed the first appeal with the Ontario Municipal Board.

That was followed by appeals from Samantha King of Vision Kingston and Annette Burfoot.

Schmolka, King and Burfoot are working together to raise $40,000 for their appeals.

Breast Reconstruction

It’s Breast Reconstruction Awareness Day or Bra Day and an event is being held today to highlight a comprehensive breast reconstruction program being offered in Kingston.  It will offer women the option to have breast reconstruction surgery immediately following a mastectomy,

The special information session is being held starting at 6:00 this evening at the Isabel Bader Centre for the Performing Arts. It will features patients who have undergone breast reconstruction surgery as well as physicians who will discuss the surgery.

Pepper Spray – Arrest

Kingston Police say pepper spray was used after a 32-year-old homeless man resisted arrest.

Police had a warrant for his arrest for breaching conditions of his probation for uttering threats and mischief.  Officers went to a wooded area off Rideau Street and found the man sleeping under a blanket…there was a struggle but it ended quickly when police pepper sprayed him.

The man is now facing the charges of breach of probation plus additional charges of resisting arrest and breach of probation.

Bullet – House

The OPP is investigating after a bullet was fired into a house on Shannon Road in Tyendinaga Township.

The homeowner told the O-P-P when he came home around 4:15 Tuesday afternoon he noticed a bullet hole in the front of his house.  The bullet had gone through the living room and lodged in the dining room wall, but police say no one was home at the time.  The O-P-P Forensic Identification Unit was called in to help with the investigation.

Student Maps

Students at Queen’s University will now be able to follow where their degree could take them on what are being called “grad maps”.

Queen’s is launching 71 “grad maps” that provide information about the students specific program and studying at Queen’s, as well as potential learning and professional development opportunities.

The grad maps are available on the Queen’s Career Services website.
