Snowfall – Road Conditions

The Kingston area was hit by a blast of heavy wet snow overnight.

Up to ten centimetres of snow fell in the area.

Crews have been out plowing roads throughout the region and most are reported to be wet with slushy sections.

 

Demonstration – CFB Kingston

CFB Kingston was advising the public to expect traffic delays on Highway 2 and Highway 15 during the morning rush hour today due to an information picket at CFB Kingston.

Members of the Public Service Alliance of Canada’s Union of National Defence Employees were conducting information pickets to protest the contracting out of some work at the armed forces base from 5 a.m. to 10 a.m. today.

 

Picton Assault – Charges

A man from Picton has been charged after a woman was sent to hospital with life threatening injuries.

Prince Edward County OPP officers responded to a call to a hospital on Saturday afternoon.

The 52-year-old man has been charged with aggravated assault and breach of previous court orders.

 

Pipeline Demonstration – Kingston

A protest over a pipeline in British Columbia closed John Counter Boulevard in Kingston on Sunday.

It started with a rally in McBurney Park where two school buses then took the protesters to John Counter Boulevard where they blocked the street at the railway crossing.

VIA and CN rail traffic has been blocked since last Thursday by a small group of protesters on Wyman Road in Tyendinaga.  The protest is still in place despite an injunction obtained by CN to remove the protesters.

 

Labour Situation – Schools

Teachers are continuing job action this week and here’s how things are shaping up in the Kingston area.

Elementary schools in the Hastings – Prince Edward District Board and Upper Canada District Board are closed today by a rotating strike and tomorrow by a province wide strike.

Elementary teachers in the Limestone District School Board will also be taking part in the province wide strike tomorrow and a rotating strike on Wednesday.

 

Ontario’s high school teachers at nine school boards…including the Limestone District Board will go on a one-day strike on Thursday.

 

And teachers at Ontario’s French schools will begin once a week strikes starting this Thursday.
