Red Light Cameras

Kingston city council is expected to approve red light cameras and rules for short term rentals when it meets tonight.

Council is set to give the green light to a five year…$3.16 million contract for 10 red light cameras.  The fine for running a red light is $325. Kingston would get $260 from every fine.

 

Council will also consider recommendations to regulate short term rentals…including Airbnb’s.

The regulations include a $180 yearly license fee…a 4% accommodation tax…limiting rentals to a primary residence…and would allow someone to only rent their home for 180 days a year.

 

High School Strike Update

The Algonquin and Lakeshore Catholic District School Board has issued a notice reminding people its high schools will be open tomorrow.

The strike by high school teachers tomorrow does not include Catholic high schools.  Teachers who belong to the Ontario Secondary School Teachers Federation will be holding that one-day walkout tomorrow at public high schools.

The Ontario English Catholic Teachers Association represents Catholic secondary teachers and they are not part of the planned strike tomorrow.

 

Fatal Crash – Victim Identified

Frontenac Provincial police have identified the person who died in that multi-vehicle pileup on Highway 401 in Kingston as a man from Nova Scotia.  33-year-old Matthew Robert Jamieson died at the scene.  16 people were taken to Kingston General Hospital by ambulance – three of them with life threatening injuries (Read More Here to more about it) following the crash that involved 30 to 40 passenger vehicles and transport trucks.In case of auto accidents you can contact auto accident attorneys as they can help you in claiming compensation. Joyceville Assault

An inmate has suffered life-threatening injuries in an assault at Joyceville Institution.

Staff at the prison found the 43-year-old inmate suffering from injuries on Sunday and he was taken to hospital by paramedics.  Officers from the OPP Penitentiary Squad were called to the prison around 4:30 Sunday afternoon.

The Pen squad and Kingston Police are investigating.

 

Boy Charged – Threats and Sexual Assault

A 13-year-old boy has been charged by Leeds County OPP and Gananoque Police with uttering threats to cause death or bodily harm and sexual assault against a person under 16.

Police say they laid charges after learning about threats made by a boy around 10:30 Saturday morning.

 

Impaired on the 401

Lennox and Addington County OPP have charged two drivers with being impaired on the 401.

37-year-old Kenneth Ferguson of Kingston has been charged with impaired driving after a pickup truck rolled over on the 401 eastbound near mile marker 573 just after 2am on Saturday.

29-year-old James Derrick Horner of Stone Mills is facing an impaired driving charge after a vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed on the 401 eastbound near County Road 4 around 1:30 Friday morning.

 

Firefighter – Donation

The University Hospitals Kingston Foundation calls it a gift of hope for its tiniest patients and the people who love them.

Local firefighter Joseph Reid has presented the foundation with a donation of over $16,000 for the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.

Reid ran in the Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Marathon in full firefighting gear to raise the money.

His twin daughters spent 113 days in the neonatal unit at Kingston General Hospital and are now healthy four-year olds.

 

Karate Kids

Kinston’s Karate Kids have come through for the Salvation Army Christmas Hamper Campaign.

More than 60 members of Tallack Martial Arts and Tallack’s Karate Kids program successfully completed the 500 Technique Challenge at Cataraqui Woods Elementary School on Saturday.

They raised $3,500 for the Hamper Campaign.
