Wolfe Island – Power Failure

Wolfe Island was hit with a major power failure this morning.

Hydro One reported the outage left 1,160 customers of the island without power.

A crew was dispatched and the power was restored to all of those customers around 8:15 a.m.

 

Wolfe Islander III – Update

If the weather cooperates – the Wolfe Islander III will be back in service on Thursday afternoon.

The latest update from the MTO says the ferry is set to leave Hamilton around 4pm tomorrow.  It should arrive in Kingston early Thursday morning and be ready to replace the Frontenac II on Thursday afternoon.

When it does return to service it will dock in Marysville and the 4:30 a.m. trip from the island will be eliminated.

 

Kingston Police Budget

The Kingston Police Services board approved the 2020 budget for the police force after cutting its mounted unit and delaying the addition of a second canine unit.

The new budget includes the hiring of eight new officers on January first and two more in September.

The original budget had been rejected as being too high to get approved by city council.  Council has set a target for increases of 2.5 per cent.

The total police budget is $39,725,450. That is an increase of 3.78 per cent.

Mayor Bryan Paterson is a member of the Police Services Board and says he believes council will support the budget during its meetings at the end of this month.

 

Green Bonds – Kingston Climate Fund

Kingston city council will be considering motions tonight to have staff investigate the establishment of green bonds and a Kingston Climate Fund.

City councillor Jim Neill is asking council for support to have the city establish green bonds people could buy to support projects that address climate change.  The bonds would carry a set interest rate and would be cashable in 20 years.  The Climate Fund would allow people to make a charitable donation to the city to do things like plant more trees and increase solar and wind power for public buildings.

 

Wrong Way Driver

A 19-year-old Kingston man is facing a charge of impaired driving after a vehicle going the wrong way on the 401 collided with another vehicle.

Lennox and Addington County OPP were called to the scene of the crash near Odessa around 2:00 a.m. on Sunday.  Nobody was injured when the westbound car going the wrong way on the 401 hit an eastbound SUV.

Ethan Kline of Kingston was arrested at the scene and on top of impaired driving charges he has also been charged with resisting arrest.

The Queen’s University Smith School of Business is making its mark on the international scene.

Its Master of International Business Program has been ranked first in North American and 48th in the world out of 100 programs ranked by The Financial Times.

The ranking is based on a wide range of criteria including design of the program, career progress and diversity of both students and faculty.
