Winds – Power Outages

Strong winds caused numerous power failures in Kingston and the surrounding area this morning.

Torrential rains also left streets flooded, cars stranded, and basements flooded.

Kingston Police say had close to three dozen reports of downed trees, downed tree branches and power lines and traffic lights that blew off poles.

Utilities Kingston was working to restore power to large areas in the city that were blacked out.

Hydro One says the wind is to blame for bringing down tree branches and causing dozens of outages in rural areas around Kingston.  Their crews were also working to restore power.

 

Wind – Wolfe Islander Ferry Service

Ferry Service to Wolfe Island was on hold this morning due to the wind.

The MTO says the Frontenac II was staying docked at the mainland until further notice.

 

The MTO also says the weather isn’t safe for the Wolfe Islander III to leave Hamilton where it has completed its five-year inspection.

The Frontenac II will remain in service from Dawson Point until the Wolfe Islander 3 returns from Hamilton.

 

Impaired Driver

Kingston Police say a man has been charged with impaired driving after a car smashed into a pole at Conacher and Sutherland Drive around 12:30 this morning.

Police say residents in the area kept the man at the scene until police arrived.

He was brought to the police station and later released on a promise to appear in court at a later date.

 

OPP Officer Charged – Impaired

A veteran OPP officer has been charged with impaired driving and driving with over the legal blood alcohol limit after an ATV crash in Tyendinaga Township on September 28th.

The ATV was being operated on private property on Lazier Road when it flipped over throwing the driver and two passengers onto the ground.  The driver and a passenger suffered minor injuries.

39-year-old Detective Constable Trisha Salmon has been charged and is scheduled to appear in court in Napanee on November 12th.  Salmon is a nine-year veteran of the OPP currently posted to the Central Hasting Detachment.

 

Ring Road Closure

The City of Kingston will be closing the ring road through City Park to motor vehicles.

It will be closed on Friday, November 15th.

The city says the ring road has been used and damaged by motorists for several years.

It says the closure will allow staff to improve the condition of the road for cyclists…other active transportation and people attending events in the park…but it will no longer be available for driving or parking vehicles.

 

United Way – Science Formal

A preview of the Queen’s Science formal is being held tomorrow and as usual – it will benefit the United Way KFLA campaign.

Queen’s Engineering students have turned Grant Hall into a Starry Night for the annual science formal.  An open house is being held for the public from 12-3pm tomorrow with donations being accepted for the United Way.

 

Amherstview Santa Claus Parade

The Amherstview Lions Club Santa Clause Parade is set to go for tomorrow.

The Parade starts at the W.J. Henderson Recreation Centre at 11am and travels along Amherst Drive to Manitou Crescent and ends at the Amherstview Community Hall.

Non-perishable food donations will be accepted along the parade route.

 

Fall Back

It is the time change weekend.

Daylight Savings ends on Sunday and you need to set your clocks back by an hour before going to bed Saturday night.

Kingston Fire and Rescue says it is also a good time to replace the batteries in your smoke and CO alarms.

 

Doug Gilmour – PartSource

The grand opening of the new PartSource store is giving you a chance for a meet and greet with Kingston hockey hero Doug Gilmour.

Gilmour will be at the store at 620 Gardiners Road for the grand opening celebration at 1:30 tomorrow afternoon.

A barbecue is also being held to raise money for the Canadian Tire Jumpstart Charities.
