New High School

Kingston’s new high school won’t be opening until next September.

Kingston Secondary School was originally scheduled to open this September but that was pushed back to the beginning of the new year.  Now the Limestone District School Board has announced the school will not be open to student until September of 2020.  KCVI will remain open until the end of this school year.  The news was relayed to trustees at their school board meeting last night.

The school board says labour disputes have delayed construction.

 

Robbery – Knights Inn

Kingston Police are investigating a robbery at the Knights Inn.

Police were called to the motel on Princess Street near Sir John A. Macdonald Boulevard around 12:30 yesterday afternoon.  A person was robbed at knifepoint.  Police say the suspect fled the scene and no arrest has been made.

 

Kingston – Terror Charges

Prosecutors have dropped one of the charges against a youth accused in a terrorism investigation in Kingston.    His lawyer, Simon Borys, says the charge of uttering threats was withdrawn in a court hearing on yesterday. The teen was charged in January with terror and bomb-related offences.  He was charged in March with further bomb-related offences as well as the now-withdrawn threats offence. Kingston Police charged him about month after that with mischief and breach of bail.  Borys says they hope to proceed with a preliminary inquiry on the terrorism charges early next year.

 

Prison Use

A teach-in on the use of prisons for tourism and business ventures is being held at Queen’s University today.

The session will offer alternative views on the use of prisons in Kingston.  It starts at 1pm in the atrium at the John Deutsch University Centre.

Queen’s scholar in political philosophy and critical prison studies, Lisa Guenther says input needs to come from former inmates of the institutions on how a former prison is being used.

For example, she says former inmates should be involved in tours at Kingston Penitentiary.

 

Federal Election Campaign

The federal election campaign is officially underway.

Candidates in Kingston and the Islands have been campaigning for several months – but the formal campaign for the October 21st election began yesterday.

Kingston and the Islands Liberal MP Mark Gerretsen is hoping to get re-elected.  His opponents are Conservative Ruslan Yakoviychuk, NDP candidate Barrington Walker, Green candidate Candice Christmas and People’s Party candidate Andy Brooke.

In Lanark-Frontenac Kingston…Conservative MP Scott Reid is being challenged by Liberal Kayley Kennedy…Stephen Kotze of the Green party and People’s Party candidate Matthew Barton.  The New Democrats are holding their nomination meeting on Saturday.

 

Leaders Debate

Rogers will host the first leaders debate of the 2019 election tonight.

It will air live from Toronto on City TV starting at 8 and on its website.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is skipping the debate and People’s Party leader Maxime Bernier won’t be there, either.

 

Rob Baker – Gord Downie Pier Video

Rob Baker of The Tragically Hip is the voice of a new safety video for Gord Edgard Downie Pier.

It was produced as part of the development of the pier sponsored with funds from the Garfield Weston Foundation.

Baker gives six key safety points and in one of them says when he was much younger he almost died after jumping off the pier to go swimming in May.

Tim Hortons Smile Cookies

Tim Hortons Smile Cookies will be back in Kingston starting on Monday.

Last year the Smile Cookie campaign raised a record $108,000 for the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Kingston General Hospital.

The official kickoff is being held at 9:30 this morning at the Tims on Princess at Centennial.
