Shot Fired

A report of a gun being fired during a dispute between neighbours brought out a large police presence in Kingston’s north end.

A neighbour reported seeing two men arguing outside 312 Conacher Drive on Saturday afternoon…one man had a gun and fired a shot into the air.

Kingston Police were assisted by the OPP in a search of the area including a police dog…but…so far nobody has been charged following the incident.

 

Child Pornography

A raid on a home in Kingston has resulted in multiple charges against a person following an investigation by Lennox and Addington County OPP.

A search warrant was executed on Friday at the home in Kingston.

A person has been charged with sexual assault, voyeurism, publication of intimate images without consent and two counts of breach of probation.

 

Cyclists

Kingston Police are asking motorists and cyclists to be safe on the roads following a number of crashes involving cyclists.  Police issued a news release last week following two accidents involving vehicles and cyclists.

There was also a crash involving a vehicle and cyclist around 7:30 Saturday night.

Kingston Police are encouraging both motorists and cyclists to make road safety a priority.

 

Bernier – Napanee

People’s Party of Canada leader Maxime Bernier has attended a rally in Napanee.

About 200 people were at the rally in the Napanee Lions Club Hall on Sunday.

Candidates for the federal election from the region including Hastings-Lennox and Addington PPC candidate Adam Gray and Kingston and the Island’s candidate Andy Brooke also attended the event

Bernier outlined the party’s platform including a free market system for dairy, limiting immigration and cutting the deficit and debt.

He said the biggest challenge is to overcome the fact that only about 50% of the population has heard of the party.

 

Water Levels

Water levels on Lake Ontario and the St. Lawrence River have dropped enough to be just below flood levels…but a lack of rainfall in July and August has led to a Level 1 drought advisory for the area.

The Cataraqui Region Conservation Authority issued the advisory on Friday for the area from Napanee to Brockville and north to Newboro.

A Level 1 advisory means there is the potential for water supply problems if there is a lack of rainfall this fall.

 

Research – Queen’s

The Director of the Gastrointestinal Diseases Research Unit at the Kingston Health Sciences Centre is leading a three-year research project on use of new opioid drugs to treat inflammatory bowel disease.

Stephen Vanner has received a $375,000 grant to investigate delivery of opioids to specific targets to reduce pain.  One of the drugs inhibits pain sensing nerves in a unique way that leads to sustained pain relief which is being properly administered by the pain center huntsville, since its another target is only nerves in inflamed tissues.

If the research is successful, the next step will be clinical trials of the drugs.

 

EarlyON Celebrations

The City of Kingston and Frontenac County are celebrating the 1st anniversary of the EarlyON Child and Family Centre programs today.

The programs are provided at 16 locations in Kingston and eight locations in Frontenac County.  They offer free drop in programs for parents and caregivers with children under six years of age.

A celebration will take place this morning at the Boys and Girls Club East end location on Innovation Drive.

The Sydenham EarlyON location on Mill Street is holding festivities, including dinner, from 1 to 7 p.m.
