Marine Museum

Kingston’s Marine Museum of the Great Lakes is returning to its original home.

An anonymous benefactor has donated the money for the museum to purchase the property at 55 Ontario Street from developer Jay Patry.

Patry’s plans for a large high rise development on the property are not going ahead.

The museum board plans to completely redevelop the site and details of a fund raising campaign to renovate the current building will be announced in the future.

 

Collins Bay – Lockdown

The medium security unit at Collins Bay Institution is under a lockdown.

Inmates were locked in their cells during the noon hour yesterday to make way for staff members to conduct an exceptional search.

A news release says the search was ordered to ensure the safety and security of the institution, its staff and inmates.

Visits have been suspended until the search is completed.

 

Stunt Driving

An 18 year old from Napanee has been charged with stunt driving after a vehicle was stopped on the 401 near Sir John A. Macdonald Boulevard going 60 kilometres an hour over the speed limit.

Frontenac OPP stopped the vehicle shortly after 11:00 p.m. on Sunday.

The driver had his license suspended for seven days and his vehicle has been impounded for seven days.

He’ll also have to appear in court to answer the charge.

 

Man Charged – Domestic Violence

A 43 year old Kingston man is facing four charges of assault and criminal harassment after a woman was assaulted on her birthday.

Kingston Police say the woman went to a north end apartment around 11:30 on Friday night to celebrate her birthday with a man she had broken up with at the end of May.

He’s been charged with attacking her and choking her on the floor.  The attack was broken up by a roommate.

Police say the man has also been charged with several other assaults on the same woman before they broke up.

 

Crystal Meth – Charges

A sad commentary on the terrible effects of crystal meth.

Kingston Police have charged a 32 year old man with damaging his parent’s vehicle and two counts of breach of probation after an incident at an office in midtown Kingston.

The man and his girlfriend were there for an appointment on Thursday morning of last week.  The woman contacted his parents to ask for help in calming him down because he was under the influence of crystal meth.

He became verbally abusive…damaged his parents vehicle with a fishing pole and took off.

He was arrested on Rideau Street on Saturday night.

 

Swim for Kids

The 3rd annual Swim for Kids at Lake Ontario Park in Kingston raised over $33,000.

79 swimmers took the plunge during the event on Saturday to raise money for Easter Seals and the Y Penguins Aquatic Club.

The participants swam either a 1.5 kilometre course or a three kilometre course to raise money for disabled kids.

 

Rose of Hope

The 21st annual Rose of Hope Golf Tournament is taking place today at the Cataraqui Golf & Country Club.

Organizers expect the event will raise a record amount today.  That’s a lofty goal.  The record of 220 thousand dollars was set last year.

Over the past 20 years the tournament has raised more than $1.6 million for cancer services in the region.
