Girl Injured

A six year old girl is in stable condition in hospital after being hit by a vehicle while riding her bicycle in the Woodhaven subdivision.

The girl was struck by the vehicle on Horizon Drive around 7:45 last night.

There is no word from Kingston Police on whether charges will be laid.

 

SIU – Investigating Death

The province’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU) is investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of a 52-year-old man in Kingston.

A news release from the SIU says Kingston Police were dispatched to the Harvey’s on Princess Street around 1:30 yesterday afternoon in relation to how a man was behaving in the restaurant.

Paramedics had also been dispatched to the restaurant.

When police arrived on scene, they located the man in the restroom area and took him into custody.

The news release says the man was transported to hospital where he went vital signs absent and was subsequently pronounced dead.

A post mortem will take place on Thursday in Kingston.

The Special Investigations Unit will determine if there was any wrongdoing by police.

 

Sexual Assaults

There has been a shocking increase in the number of sexual assaults being reported to Kingston Police.

According to figures released by Statistics Canada, 192 sexual assaults were reported last year…an increase of 52 from 2017 and more than double the number reported in 2016.

Police Chief Antje McNeely attributes the sharp increase in more victims reporting sexual assaults and updated definitions of criminal incidents.

Sexual Assault Centre Kingston says only 10 to 15% of victims actually report the crime to police and the number of clients they have served has jumped from 220 in 2016 to more than 400 in 2018.

It says funding from the province has been cut from $80,000 over three years to a one time grant of $20,000.  It had planned to use the funding to hire two new counsellors but won’t be able to.

 

Brass Point Bridge – Delays

Parks Canada says there may be delays for vehicles using the Brass Point Bridge on Burnt Hills Road today.

Work is being done on the swing bridge and officials say they hope to be able to perform the work while the bridge swings open for navigation of boats on the Rideau Canal.

Parks Canada says the work will not have an impact on boater navigation.

 

City News

Work is continuing at the intersection of Sir John A. Macdonald Boulevard and Norman Rogers Drive.  The city of Kingston is preparing to install a pedestrian traffic signal at that location.  It will be ready for September 1st.

The move comes after complaints about the safety of people crossing Sir John A. Boulevard.

The city has already reduced the speed limit from 60 to 50 kilometres an hour.

 

And…the city is installing washroom facilities at Breakwater Park.  The new facilities have been built inside a container and will be available for the busy park near the Gord Edgar Downie Pier.

Fireball – Sightings Confirmed

If you were awake very early this morning you may have seen a meteor streak across the sky.

Kingston resident Michael Ladouceur saw the fireball in the western sky around 2:42 this morning.

Ladouceur says the bright greenish colored fireball crossed the sky from north to south.

The American Meteor Society has received two dozen reports of the fireball from people in southern Ontario and the northern U-S.
