City Councillor charged

It has been revealed that a Kingston city councillor is facing charges of causing a disturbance and obstructing property, following an incident in June.

Sydenham district Councillor Peter Stroud is accused of approaching a Kingston Transit bus while on his bike, and delaying it by placing a child on the ground in front of it, blocking it with his bike, and yelling at the driver.

Reports say Stroud will face the charges in court on August 15th, and will not comment until the matter is settled.

 

Napanee Collision

One person has died, following a two-vehicle collision in Napanee on Saturday.

The OPP were called to the scene just before 1pm, where they found a motorcycle and pickup truck had collided.

Investigators say the cause of the collision is being investigated.

 

Algonquin Park Missing Girls

Police say a search is underway for two teenage girls who were camping in Algonquin Provincial Park.

The two 16 year olds were last seen on Thursday on the Western Uplands Trail, and were reported missing around 10pm on Friday.

The girls, who are both from Kitchener, Ont., were part of a camping group, and the pair had a tent but limited camping supplies.

Police say the air and ground search began on Saturday, and continues today.

 

 

Canada Border Security

A new policy from Canada’s border-security agency is drawing concern over its perceived “criminalization” of asylum seekers.

The C-B-S-A is requiring officers working with detained migrants to wear defensive gear, including “soft body armour” and steel-toed boots.

A group of doctors, lawyers, legal scholars and human rights groups is urging Public Safety Minister Ralph Goodale to cancel the policy.

 

Pikangikum – UPDATE

Evacuations have been put on hold for Pikangikum first nation, as the forest fire threatening the community has reduced in size.

Ontario’s forestry ministry says as of Sunday, the fire was about 447-square kilometres and had shrunk by 60 after a few days of rain.

Emergency officials say the full evacuation of the First Nation was paused in light of the good news.

Nearly 2100 of the 4-thousand people living in the community have been evacuated.
