Collins Bay Institution – Drones

 

The Correctional Service has taken to social media to ask the public for help with detecting drones being used to drop contraband on the grounds of Collins Bay Institution and other prisons.

Messages on its Facebook and Twitter accounts say If you believe UAVs are being used suspiciously around Collins Bay Institution, or any of the Kingston area correctional institutions, please call us immediately.

Of course, you can also call police.

 

The Correctional Service also says a search on the grounds of Collins Bay involving Police on Monday night was because of a suspicious person being spotted on the property and did not involve a drone or an escapee.

 

Inmate Charged – Assault

 

A 28 year old inmate at Millhaven Institution has been charged after a correctional officer suffered a serious injury in an attack on September 20th.

The Joint Forces Penitentiary Squad has charged Colton Ferguson with Aggravated Assault of a Peace Officer and Possession of Weapon for a Dangerous Purpose.

Ferguson is serving a sentence for second degree murder in the killing of a 23 year old mother of two in Toronto in 2010.

 

Lockdown Over – Joyceville

 

The lockdown put in place at the Assessment Unit of Joyceville Institution is over.

The lockdown was put in place on November 6th to allow staff to conduct an exceptional search.

A news release says a number of unauthorized items were found during the search.

 

Child Pornography Charges

 

A 50 year old Kingston man is facing multiple child pornography charges.

Kingston Police executed a search warrant at the man’s home on November 2nd following an investigation that began in June.

Numerous devices were seized.

The man was arrested on Monday at Kingston Police headquarters and faces charges of making child pornography available, possessing child pornography, and accessing child pornography.

 

Gananoque – Pot Town

 

There may be a battle brewing in Gananoque about whether people will be able to smoke pot in public.

Gananoque Town Council has given preliminary approval to a bylaw that prohibits recreational cannabis users from smoking it anywhere in public.  It is set to approve that bylaw next week…but a petition has been launched to get council to reconsider and the town’s newly elected mayor says he’s against the bylaw.

Ted Lojko says if the bylaw is passed he’ll revisit the issue.  Lojko says he doesn’t see any reason not to follow the provinces guidelines that allow pot smokers to light up wherever tobacco smokers are allowed.

 

Traumatic Injury – Mental Health Disorders

 

Research from Queen’s University shows people who suffer a major traumatic injury have an increased risk of developing mental health disorders and even taking their own lives.

The new study published in the Canadian Medical Association Journal was based on more than 19,000 patients in Ontario.

It found people who experience major injuries requiring hospitalization have a 40% increase in hospital admissions for a mental health issue.

 

Tree of Hope

 

Family and Children’s Services of Frontenac, Lennox and Addington is officially launching its Tree of Hope Holiday Appeal with tree lightings in Kingston and Napanee tonight.

The campaign is designed to provide toys, clothing and more to 900 children.

The agency says a third of the children it helped last year lived outside of Kingston including more than 100 in Napanee.
