Nova Scotia – Shooting

Nova Scotia is in mourning follow a shooting rampage that claimed at least 17 lives.

The shooting spree began Saturday night.

The suspect, 51-year-old Gabriel Wortman, was killed when he was intercepted at a gas station yesterday.

Constable Heidi Stevenson, a 23-year member of the RCMP and mother of two, was also killed during the shooting rampage.

 

Joy Ride

A stolen Ford Mustang and two police vehicles have been damaged after a man was arrested following a high-speed joyride in Kingston.

The car was stolen yesterday afternoon and wound up on the Lemoine Point Farm property where it was boxed in by police and the suspect was arrested.

 

COVID – Numbers

The number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in Kingston, Frontenac, Lennox and Addington has increased by one.  The single case was reported on the KFL&A Public Health website on Sunday.

56 people have now tested positive in this region…52 have since recovered.

Nobody is currently being treated for the coronavirus in Kingston’s hospitals.

Health officials are set to present new projections about the spread of COVID-19 in Ontario today. The province reported another 568 cases of the illness and 39 additional deaths yesterday.

 

COVID – Community Gardens

The push is on to allow people to plant community gardens during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Kingston and the Islands MPP Ian Arthur has written Ontario Public Health to enquire if they could be open with additional safety measures.

And Kingston City Council will consider a motion asking for the province to allow community gardens to be planted this spring.

The motion will ask the city to write Premier Doug Ford asking him to allow community gardens to open.

 

COVID – Parliament

It sounds like members of Parliament will return to work today.  The Conservatives have rejected a Liberal proposal to hold one in-person session and up to two virtual sessions per week. Conservative leader Andrew Scheer dismissed the proposal…insisting on three in-person sessions a week

 

COVID – New Research

A flood of new research suggests that far more people have had the new coronavirus without any symptoms.  That means the virus may turn out to be much less lethal than originally feared.  But it also makes it tough to know who’s contagious because people who don’t feel sick can still spread the bug.

 

Kingston – #1 Sports City

Kingston has been ranked as the number one Canadian Sport City with a population of 150 thousand to 500 thousand.

The ranking by the Canadian Sport Tourism Alliance is based on sporting events that took place last year and championship tournaments planned for this year.

Unfortunately, the rankings were made before the coronavirus pandemic led to the cancellations of sports events.

 

Medical Software

A Kingston company has developed software that allows people to visit a family doctor online…and it has become a popular tool for doctors during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Novari Health created the video software in an initiative with the Ontario Medical Association and Ministry of Health.  You need a health card to be able to access the free service.

Weekend Fund Raiser

A Kingston entertainer has held an online fund-raising event for the Kingston Youth Shelter.

Al Babcock organized, “It’s All in Your Head?”, a variety show were performers were encouraged to share their experiences and struggles with Mental Health.

It featured more than 40 Live Streams from Kingston on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

Babcock set up a GoFundMe page that has raised $1,435 for the Kingston Youth Shelter. The goal was a thousand dollars.
