Something Special

 

There is labour peace at a day care centre in Kingston that had been closed after employees were locked out.  The union representing the eight workers and the Something Special Children’s Centre reached a contract agreement on Friday.  It has been ratified and the day care centre will be open today.

CUPE says the employees were able to maintain their sick day benefits.

 

Armed Robbery

 

Kingston Police are looking for a suspect after a robbery at the Family Mart on Sutherland Drive.

A man with a knife entered the store around nine on Friday night.  Kingston Police haven’t released any information about what took place.  The Emergency Response Team and canine unit had been called to the scene.  Nobody was arrested.

 

Bus Lanes – Electric Bus

 

Kingston city council will be considering setting up dedicated lanes for Kingston Transit buses when it meets tomorrow night.

Councillor Peter Stroud’s motion asks for city staff to identify one north-south lane and one east-west lane to be reserved for buses only.

 

City council will also be asked to approve the purchase of two electric buses.  The city’s portion of the $2.7 million cost would be $1.1 million.

 

Scotiabank Donation

 

The redevelopment of the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at the Kingston Health Sciences Centre has received a major gift.  Scotiabank has donated $500,000 for the major expansion of the facilities.

The project will include private rooms for each baby and advanced technology to treat infants in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.

 

Winter Clothing

 

The Kingston Health Sciences Centre says there is an urgent need for winter clothing donations.

It says it needs coats, hats, gloves, mitts, socks and blankets…and they especially need men’s coats in extra-large and extra, extra-large sizes.

Donations can be dropped off in a red bin inside the Sydenham Street entrance of Hotel Dieu Hospital.

United Way – 85%

 

The United Way KFLA Campaign has hit a major milestone.

It wrapped up last week at the $3 million mark.  That is 85% of this year’s goal of $3.55 million.

Campaign Chair Scott Harris is confident they will reach the goal and says every donation counts.

The campaign wraps up with a touchdown breakfast on November 28th.

 

Commuter Note – Lower Brewers Bridge

 

A note for commuters who use the Lower Brewers Bridge…

Parks Canada will be closing the Lower Brewers Bridge at Washburn Road this week.

It will be setting up a detour route for the week.

 

Napanee Lights – Kingston Santa Parade

 

They lit up the downtown in Napanee and Santa Claus came to town in Kingston on the weekend.

The Big Bright Light Show kicked off in Napanee on Friday night with the downtown being lit up with 750 thousand LED Christmas lights.

The Downtown Kingston Santa Claus parade attracted thousands of people to the parade route on Princess Street on Saturday night.  The lights on the city’s Christmas tree in Springer Market Square were turned on following the parade
