Fire – Person Taken to KGH

One person was taken to Kingston General Hospital for treatment after fire broke out in an apartment on Montreal Street.

Kingston Fire and Rescue was called to 412 Montreal Street around 11:50 last night.

Fire was reported in the basement apartment of the residence.

Firefighters quickly knocked down the fire.

A man was taken to hospital with unknown injuries.

 

Contraband – Joyceville

The Correctional Service says police are investigating after a package of contraband was seized in the Assessment unit at Joyceville Institution.

Staff found the package around 11 p.m. on August 30th.

It contained seven grams of marijuana, 54 grams of tobacco and rolling papers.

Corrections says the stuff would have been worth $6,100 inside the institution.

 

Missing Girl Located

A 16-year-old Kingston girl who has gone missing several times has been found.

Kingston Police say Kayla Hartwick was found on Monday and is safe.

She had last been seen in Kingston on July 30th.

Hartwick had also gone missing for a week at the beginning of July.

 

Electric Buses

Kingston mayor Brian Paterson says it is the first step in the purchase of Kingston’s first electric bus.

The city is one of 18 municipalities in Canada to get funding through the Municipalities for Climate Innovation Program.  Kingston is getting $556,000.

 

Kingston – New Slogan

Kingston is considering adopting a slogan for marketing campaigns.

The city’s Brand Development Working Group is considering, Possible Made Here, for the slogan.

It will be asking for public input before any decisions about the new marketing slogan are made.

The slogan is not meant as a replacement for the slogan…Where History and Innovation Thrive.

 

UHKF

The University Hospitals Kingston Foundation will be introducing its new President and CEO today.

Tamas Zsolnay has been selected to take over the job.

Zsolnay comes to Kingston from the University of Victoria where he was Associate Vice-President of Alumni and Development.  He has also served as a Colonel in the Army Reserves and was the Chief Operations Officer of the United Nations Military Observers monitoring the peace agreement between Ethiopia and Eritrea in 2002 and 2003.

 

Car Show – Melanoma Clinic

The Limestone City Car Classic on Saturday in Lake Ontario Park raised $14,000 for the Melanoma Cancer Clinic at Kingston General Hospital.

Organizers David Dick and Brian Beattie say three thousand people attended the event that feature almost 500 vehicles.

The event was started in honour of Beattie’s daughter, Melonie, who passed away from skin cancer at age 35.

The annual car show has now raised $64,000 for the cancer clinic since it began in 2013.
