Welcome Back

Most students are returning to school today…although the Upper Canada District School Board doesn’t start its school year until tomorrow.

Tri-Board Transportation is reminding drivers about stopping for school buses that have their flashing lights going.  Police are asking you to watch out for people who may be walking on or crossing streets.

 

Queen’s University students have started their orientation after move-in day on Saturday.

The University is welcoming just over 4,500 first year students.

The annual Rotary Club Nut Drive takes place this afternoon with Engineering Frosh going door to door in Kingston.

 

At St. Lawrence College – officials say they won’t have exact enrollment numbers available until mid-September for the Kingston campus.  They are expecting more than 2,800 students with just over 400 of them being international students on campus starting today.

Orientation today includes a barbecue and other activities.

 

Students – Partying

30 thousand students have returned to Kingston to attend Queen’s, RMC and St. Lawrence College.

Some of them have been getting together for parties.

Kingston Police were called to Breakwater Park and the Gord Edgar Downie Pier around 11:45 last night.  A large group of students had gathered in the park.

The group broke up when police arrived.

 

Labour Day

Hundreds of people took part in Kingston’s annual Labour Day Parade and Picnic.

The presidents of the two largest public sector unions in Ontario attended the Labour Day events in Kingston.

CUPE Ontario President Fred Hahn and Kingston native and OPSUE President Smokey Thomas spoke to the crowd along with Kingston and the Islands NDP MPP Ian Arthur and the federal NDP candidate in Kingston – Barrington Walker.

 

Motorcycle – Pedestrian

Kingston Police are asking for help from the public in their investigation into a crash involving a motorcycle and pedestrian early Sunday morning.

The pedestrian suffered serious injuries in the crash at the corner of Brock Street and University Avenue.

Kingston Police would like to speak to the driver of a vehicle that was at the intersection at the time of the collision and any other witnesses.

 

Multi-Vehicle Crash

Nobody was seriously injured in a crash at Princess Street and Sir John A. Macdonald Boulevard that damaged five vehicles.

A car going west on Princess Street at a high rate of speed slammed into another car…it clipped another vehicle that hit a utility pole and it fell on two vehicles at the intersection.

The two people in the westbound car took off.  One person was arrested. Police were looking for another.

 

Artillery Park Closed

The Artillery Park Aquatic Centre will be closed from today until September 15th.

It is time for annual maintenance at the centre and that means the pool, gym, fitness, and meeting rooms are closed for the next two weeks.
