Weapon Charges

A 22 year old man is facing 6 charges including assault with a weapon and theft, following an altercation on Monday.

Two victims went to the home of the accused, and an argument over property and money started.

The accused allegedly brandished a bat and retreated to his apartment…and returned, with two pistols, uttering threats.

He was located around 10pm, when he turned himself in at police headquarters.

 

Additional Charges

A 39 year old man is facing additional charges stemming from a case in early June.

On June 4th, the accused was taken into custody after speeding down Glengarry Road and colliding with a house.

Police executed a search warrant on the vehicle on June 20th, and found Fentanyl inside.

The accused turned himself in at police headquarters on Monday to face the additional charge.

 

Bath Inmate Death

Officials at Bath Institution are reporting the death of an inmate in their care.

77 year old Clifford Chippier died on June 7th, of apparent natural causes.

Chippier had been serving an indeterminate sentence since 1992.

The inmate’s next of kin have been notified of his passing, and the Correctional Service of Canada is reviewing the circumstances.

Pikangikum Fires

Authorities say more residents of a First Nation in northwestern Ontario are being moved out of the community today, as a forest fire burns nearby.

A full evacuation of Pikangikum’s 38-hundred residents began yesterday, with community members leaving on flights, boats, and buses.

A spokeswoman for the Canadian Armed Forces says around 300 people have been airlifted out of the community on military planes so far and two more flights are scheduled for today.

The Ministry of Natural Resources says firefighters are trying to direct the blaze to natural boundaries like lakes, and have installed sprinklers around the community in an attempt to stop the fire from spreading into the community

 

Premier’s Summit

Canada’s 13 premiers will sit down behind closed doors in Saskatoon today to discuss issues like trade and climate policy.

Host premier Scott Moe says one priority is breaking down trade barriers between the jurisdictions.

Yesterday, the premiers — except those from Ontario and three Atlantic provinces — visited Big River First Nation north of Saskatoon to meet with Indigenous leaders, and were urged to get to work reforming child welfare systems for Indigenous youth

 

Bombardier Layoffs

A federal government source says Bombardier will lay off 550 workers in Thunder Bay.

The source spoke anonymously to The Canadian Press, saying the layoffs come as two major contracts are slated to halt by the end of the year.

As it stands, 11-hundred people work at the Thunder Bay plant.

 

Attawapiskat Water

Attawapiskat First Nation in Northern Ontario is declaring a state of emergency over its water quality.

The band council declared the emergency over the weekend, after water tests shows potentially harmful levels of byproducts used in the disinfection process.

Reports say those in the community have been warned not to wash their food, limit their time in the shower, and not use hot water.
