Kingston Police – Cleared by SIU

Ontario’s police watchdog says two Kingston Police officers involved in an arrest that resulted in injuries to a man will not face charges of using excessive force.

The two officers had stopped a truck coming off the 401 at Division Street on September 8th of last year.  A man and woman under surveillance for trafficking fentanyl were in the vehicle.  The man suffered a broken shoulder bone when he was pulled out of the passenger window and handcuffed on the ground.

The Special Investigations Unit says it found no evidence of excessive force in the arrest.

 

Millhaven – Lockdown Ends

The lockdown put in place at Millhaven Institution on May 1st has ended.

The Correctional Service say a number of unauthorized items were found during an exceptional search of the prison.

It says the institution has resumed its normal operations and visits to the institution have also resumed.

 

Impaired – Transport Driver

The driver of a transport truck has been charged with driving while impaired by a drug on the 401 in Kingston.  Frontenac OPP says the truck was stopped around 12:45 Saturday afternoon on the eastbound 401 near Montreal Street after a complaint about the trucker.

39 year old Davinder Cheema of Caledon had his driver’s license suspended for 90 days and the transport was towed from the highway.  He has a court date in Kingston next month.

 

OPP – Stunt Driving

Frontenac OPP and Lennox and Addington OPP have busted a total of 8 people for stunt driving…going more than 50 kilometres an hour over the speed limit.

Frontenac OPP say three of the drivers were nabbed on the 401 in Kingston and three were stopped in other area of the county on Saturday and Sunday.

Lennox and Addington OPP stopped two drivers on the 401 west of Kingston.

Top speed was 183 kilometres an hour.

Only one of the drivers was from Kingston – a 24 year old man nabbed for going 61k over the speed limit.

All of the drivers had their vehicles towed and impounded for a week and have lost their licenses for a week.

 

Chamber – Kingston Policies

The Ontario Chamber of Commerce wants the Ontario government to get down to business in high school and promote skilled trades.

Delegates at the Ontario Chamber annual general meeting supported two policy papers from the Greater Kingston Chamber that have now become official policy of the Ontario Chamber.

The policies from the Kingston Chamber include a mandatory grade ten course on business and commerce and a public registry for tradespeople to confirm companies are in good standing.

 

Traffic Note

The Kingston Mills swing bridge will be closed to all vehicle and pedestrian traffic between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Parks Canada says the closure is for routine maintenance.

 

Marketing Students – 14 Grand

St. Lawrence College students in the Advertising and Marketing Communications program have raised more than $14,000 for Charity:Water.

The non-profit organization brings clean and safe drinking water to people in developing countries and 100 per cent of the money that is raised goes to the actual project.

Over 100 students at the college in Kingston used several methods to raise the funds including a talent show, individual challenges and an awareness campaign during World Water Day.

Plant Swap

The Kingston Frontenac Public Library has announced its first ever plant swap will take place on Saturday, May 18th.

The idea is to offer people a chance to share extra plants or seeds with fellow Kingston gardeners, and find some new plants and cuttings for their own gardens.

The plant swap will take place starting at 2pm on the 18th at the Isabel Turner Branch of the Library.
