Transport Collisions

Two separate transport crashes that closed the 401 eastbound near Napanee yesterday morning have resulted in one driver facing charges.

The driver of the big rig that went off the highway just east of Palace Road around 6:45 yesterday morning has been charged with careless driving.

The other transport crashed into the back of a pickup truck stuck in the traffic jam created by the first crash.  The OPP says he will also be charged.

The eastbound lanes didn’t re-open until just before 10 yesterday morning.

 

Napanee Drug Bust

A drug bust in Napanee involved the seizure of fentanyl, methamphetamine and hydromorphone – an opioid.

Lennox and Addington County OPP executed a search warrant at a residence on Dundas Street West around 5am yesterday. Investigators seized the drugs worth approximately $1,500 along with cash, and stolen property.

40 year old John Walsh faces three drug trafficking charges along with a charge of possession of a gun while being prohibited.

37 year old Sarah McNamee has been charged with three counts of drug possession.

 

New Paramedic Chief

The new chief of Frontenac Paramedic Services is no stranger to the service.

Current deputy chief of operations, Gale Chevalier, was the unanimous choice of the search committee.

Chevalier will replace Paul Charbonneau who is retiring later this year.

 

Climate Change Display

A special display called, “Climate Change is Here”, has arrived in Kingston.

Mayor Bryan Paterson unveiled the exhibit yesterday.

It features images from National Geographic displayed on panels outside city hall.

The exhibit is on loan from the Canada Science and Technology Museum and will be on display until July 7th.

 

Eye Machine Donation

The Kingston Health Sciences Centre’s Ophthalmology Department has received a gift of $31,460 from Lions Clubs in two districts.  The clubs have made the donation to the University Hospitals Kingston Foundation to help with the purchase of a new piece of equipment for the treatment of cataracts. The device uses advanced imaging technology to provide extremely accurate measurements of the eye allowing surgeons to select the most appropriate optic lens to use for the implant.

 

Easter – Holiday

The Easter Holiday means most retail outlets in Kingston will be closed on Friday and Sunday…that includes grocery stores, beer and liquor stores.

Kingston Transit will not operate tomorrow.  Buses will run on their regular schedule on Saturday, Sunday and Monday.

There is no garbage or recycling collection on Friday or Monday.  Friday’s collection will take place on Saturday and collection next week will be the day after your regular day.

City offices and facilities will be closed on both Friday and Monday.

 

Youth Council Summit

The United Way’s Youth Council will gather at city hall today for the fifth annual Youth Summit.

The Youth Council provides the United Way with input on things like homelessness and employment.  The aim of the summit taking place today is to raise awareness about issues faced by youth…especially those that could lead to homelessness.

The event is sponsored by the RBC Foundation.

It has been organized in partnership with agencies, the City of Kingston and local school boards.
