Rainfall Record – Sewage Overflow

Kingston was hit with a record rainfall on Sunday.

The rainfall recorded at the Kingston airport weather station was 17.5mm…a record for April 14th.

The previous record was about a millimeter less and was recorded on April 14th of last year.

The rainfall was less than expected but it did lead to one sewage overflow.

Utilities Kingston’s overflow mapping tool shows an overflow into Lake Ontario at the shoreline at the east end of William Street.

Fatal Crash

A 62 year old man from Prince Edward County died when he was hit by a transport truck on the 401 in Kingston.

The OPP says Bobby Gale was travelling westbound from Quebec when he apparently had car trouble around 4:00 a.m. Saturday.  He left his vehicle about 1 kilometre east of Highway 15 and was killed when he was hit by the truck.  The truck driver remained at the scene and the OPP says it is not considering any charges.

Gale was well known in radio – he had worked in Windsor, Toronto, Montreal and the U-S before becoming a record company representative and a music promoter.

Colleagues paid tribute to him Sunday afternoon during his volunteer radio gig on the Prince Edward County community radio station.

Pedestrian Problems – Fort Frontenac

The sidewalk along Ontario Street at Fort Frontenac will remain closed for the foreseeable future.

The sidewalk from the Tragically Hip Way to the Causeway was closed on Friday because of major structural problems.

Work to repair the wall will begin this summer – but is expected to take three summers to complete.

The city and defence department are working on finding an alternative route for pedestrians.

St. Lawrence – Dedication

St. Lawrence College will be holding a dedication ceremony for two special canoes today.

The canoes were created by Algonquin Master Birch bark canoe builder Chuck Commanda from Kitigan-Zibi, Quebec. The ceremony will take place starting at 3:00 p.m. in the new Student Life and Innovation Centre on the Kingston campus followed by a smudging ceremony and refreshments in the Indigenous Centre.

OPP – Kids Shoe Thief

Police say they expect to release more information after arresting a man for stealing children’s shoes on at least two occasions from a business in Amherstview.

Police executed a search warrant at a home in Bath last Thursday night and seized a large quantity of property.

54 year old Daniel Kennedy was charged with two counts of theft and one count of possession of stolen property.

Police say they were able to make the arrest thanks to information received from the public after surveillance video was posted on the OPP Twitter feed.

Vaccination Rates

KFL&A Public Health says the overall vaccination rate for Kingston, Frontenac, Lennox and Addington is 97.6 per cent.

That should help protect most people from a possible measles outbreak.

Cases of measles have become more common this year…but no cases have been reported in the Kingston area.

Health Canada blames the measles outbreaks on a decline in vaccination rates and complacency about the risks of the diseases the vaccines prevent.
