Council – Climate Emergency

Kingston City council has voted unanimously in favour of declaring a climate emergency in Kingston.

Trillium District councillor Robert Kiley put forward the motion last night.

Kiley says the city now has to act on the declaration and take aggressive, measurable emission reductions all across the community.

The declaration has already been endorsed by Kingston and the Islands MPP Ian Arthur – a New Democrat and Ontario Green Party Leader Mike Schriener – who also an MPP in the Ontario legislature.

Consultant Hired

Kingston has hired Vancouver based urban design expert Brent Toderian to work with city staff.

The city is going to develop new policies on tall buildings across Kingston with the help of the well-known consultant.

The city will launch a public outreach campaign next month to gauge the public’s opinion on the building policy.

Injuries – Pedestrian and Driver

Paramedics say a female pedestrian and the female passenger in a white Hummer have suffered critical injuries in a single vehicle crash on Bath Road near Sir John A. Macdonald Boulevard.  The male driver suffered serious injuries in the crash.

The vehicle hit the woman and a utility pole around 3:50 yesterday afternoon. The westbound lanes of Bath Road were closed while police investigated.

Pedestrian – Vehicle Collision

A male pedestrian suffered non-life threatening injuries when they were hit by a vehicle in downtown Kingston.  Police say an elderly woman hit the gas instead of the brake and hit the man around 11am yesterday at Gore and Ontario Streets.  The vehicle jumped the curb…ran over the sidewalk and took out a sign.

Hit and Run

Kingston Police are asking for help from the public in tracking down the driver who hit a cyclist with an SUV and took off on Monday night.

The male cyclist was knocked off his bike and landed on the sidewalk on Bayridge Drive at Coverdale Drive.

He was taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

A plastic fog light cover belonging to a 2009 to 2011 Honda Pilot was found at the scene.

Anyone with information about the vehicle or driver is being asked to contact Kingston Police or Crime Stoppers.

Wiintery Blast – Colborne

Kingston escaped with about a centimetre of snow yesterday…most of it coming in about a half hour of heavy flurries during the afternoon.  West of Kingston it was a different story.  17cm of snow was recorded at the CFB Trenton weather station.

The OPP closed the 401 in both directions in the Cobourg area due to whiteout conditions.  Police used snowmobiles to check on people stuck in their vehicles during the closure.  The highway re-opened around 5pm yesterday.

Best Place for Women

Kingston has been name the Best Place to be a Woman in Canada.

The Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives has released it Best and Worst Places to be a Woman in Canada report for 2019 and the results are featured in MacLean’s magazine.

The report is based on women’s access to economic security, education, health, leadership and personal security.

Kingston got high marks for education and economic security…but scored poorly when it comes to personal safety.

Brian Lipsin says he’s looking forward to welcoming people to his store after being closed for seven months due to a flood.

Lipsin posted a video on Facebook yesterday saying he will be re-opening Brian’s Record Option on Saturday, March 16th.

Lipsin says he is still organizing the store – but has decided he can’t wait any longer to welcome people back to his used record store on Princess Street.
