Flooding Possible

The Cataraqui Region Conservation Authority says the potential exists for localized flooding due to the mild weather and rain in the forecast.

Officials are keeping an eye on Millhaven Creek and say low lying areas in Odessa along Gore Street could suffer from flooding due to ice jams.

The Conservation Authority is also asking people to stay away from dams, fast flowing water and says ice conditions could be unstable due to rain and mild weather.

 

Homestead – Planning Tribunal

The Local Planning Appeal Tribunal begins a hearing this morning into proposals for two high rise apartment buildings in downtown Kingston.  Homestead Landholdings wants to build a 17 and a 19 storey building on Queen Street in downtown Kingston.

 

Shots Fired – Attempted Murder Charges

A 53 year old man from Brockville and a 31 year old man from Perth have been charged with attempted murder after shots were fired at an apartment building on Fraser Street in Kingston last week.

The pair were arrested in Brockville on Friday.  Both have been charged with two counts of attempted murder and four counts of discharging a firearm with intent.  Police are still looking for a third suspect in the case.

Three men had tried to break into a second storey apartment at 73 Fraser Street early last Tuesday morning – when they couldn’t get in they fired shots at the apartment from outside the building.

 

Scare – Lengthy Delays – VIA

There was a real scare and a lengthy delay for passengers on a VIA Rail train from Toronto to Ottawa when it hit debris near Trenton on Saturday.

Nobody was injured on the train when it hit the debris that shattered a window in the rear car of the train.

The passenger train was delayed for six hours.

 

Polar Plunge

Organizers are thanking participants and donors for raising a record amount for Special Olympics in the 2019 Kingston Polar Plunge.  Over a hundred people took the plunge from the Crawford Wharf yesterday and raised a record of over $50,000.  Last year 81 people took part and raised $33,250,

The Polar Plunge has raised over $205,000 for Special Olympics since it started in 2013.

 

Super Bowl Dog

The Super Bowl had a Kingston connection…Fletcher the four year old Irish Setter.

The dog appeared in the ad for Avocados from Mexico featuring dogs who resemble their TV owners.

Fletcher’s real owner, Mike Rimmer, says his dog got his big break after being spotted by a talent scout at a dog show.
