Snow Day – Prince Edward County

It was another snow day for students in Prince Edward County.  The Hastings and Prince Edward District School Board announced early this morning that school buses for students in the County would not be operating today due to snow squalls.  Tri-Board Student Transportation says buses are operating for other areas today.

 

Snow – I-81 and Travel

It is not a good day to be driving south into the U-S at the Thousand Islands crossing. The International Border Crossing at Ivy Lea is under restrictions.  No buses or transports are being allowed across the border due to the weather.

A travel advisory has been issued for Jefferson County and there is a no unnecessary travel advisory for Lewis County.

Jefferson County has already received about 45 cm of snow and a weather advisory says it could receive up to 90cm or 36 inches by tomorrow morning.

 

Council – Budget Approved

You can add another 2.5% increase to your property tax bill in the city of Kingston.

City council approved the city’s 2019 budget last night including the 2.5% increase in property taxes.  The increase includes 1 per cent for infrastructure projects.

City council will formally approve the final draft of the budget in mid-February.

It includes an operating budget of just under $379 million and a capital budget of $50 million.

 

Probation Man

A 46 year old Kingston man is facing multiple charges after a man was seen with what appeared to be a gun forcing their way into a woman’s room at a motel in Kingston.

Police were called and say they found a pellet gun, brass knuckles along with two small bags of cocaine and crystal meth in a pair of shoes when they arrested the man around 3am on Wednesday.

The man faces multiple charges including three counts of breach of probation.

 

Queen’s – Research Grants

Queen’s University researchers are getting $4.6 million from the federal government.

Science and Sport Minister Kirsty Duncan announced the support for 92 researchers at Queen’s yesterday.

The money is part of $141 million dollars in research support for 79 educational institutions across Canada.

 

Police – Surveillance Photos

Kingston Police have released surveillance pictures of the suspects in a shooting incident at an apartment on Fraser Street (below).  Kingston Police says the three suspects began pounding on a second floor apartment door around 3:15 Tuesday morning and were demanding money.  All three were wearing ski masks…one was carrying a silver handgun and another had a shotgun.

When they failed to get into the apartment they left the building and fired multiple shots at the apartment windows.  Police say at least one round went through a child’s bedroom window – but nobody was injured.

The three men left in a light coloured car and a dark coloured SUV.

Anyone with information about the incident is being asked to contact Kingston Police or Crime Stoppers.

 

Crash – Impaired Driving

A single vehicle collision on Battersea Road has resulted in a charge of impaired driving.

Frontenac OPP was called to the crash around 9:30 on Sunday night.

54 year old Cassel Miles of Seeley’s Bay has been charged with impaired driving and refusing to provide a breath sample.

 

Queen’s – IGnite

Two top researchers from Queen’s University will be speaking about oral history and climate change at the Isabel Bader Centre tonight.  The session is part of Queen’s IGnite…Research Stories to Inspire Generations series.

Laura Murray will be talking about Kingston’s historical Swamp Ward.

The title of the presentation by Canada Research Chair in Environmental Change John Smol is…Back to the Future: Using the past to inform environmental policy.

St. Lawrence – Research Happens Here

St. Lawrence College will be showcasing its research activities today.

Faculty researchers and students will gather with their industry and economic development partners this afternoon for the event.  It’s called…Research Happens Here and takes place from 1-4pm.

It will include tours of the St. Lawrence College Sustainable Energy Applied Research Centre, presentations by academic and industry researchers and a beer tasting courtesy of a local craft brewery.
