School Transportation Cancelled

It was a snow day for students throughout the region because of the extreme cold and wind chill.

Both Tri-Board Student Transportation and Student Transportation of Eastern Ontario announced Sunday night there would be no student transportation today.

That means no school transportation for students attending schools in the Limestone District School Board, Algonquin and Lakeshore Catholic District School Board, Hastings and Prince Edward District School Board….Catholic District School Board of Eastern Ontario and the Upper Canada District School Board.

 

Roads

Roads were slippery this morning because of the extreme cold.

Main roads in Kingston ranged from bare to snow packed and icy.

Secondary roads and side streets were snow packed and slippery.

The MTO reports the 401 is mainly bare and dry but there are snow packed and icy sections and the same goes for secondary highways throughout the region.

Crews worked non-stop through Sunday and overnight to clear the largest snowfall so far this winter.

 

Accidents

Kingston Police were called to investigate 20 accidents between Saturday night and late last night.

Two were reported to include injuries.

The OPP says there were a large number of vehicles of the road on highways throughout the area due the weather and poor driving conditions.

 

Prison Vans – Lawsuit

A federal inmate from Bath Institution claims he was shackled in a cramped transport van for hours despite a heart condition and is suing the federal government. 65 year old Edwin Nott says he was confined to the van during a court appearance last February and is suing for a million dollars.

Federal lawyers deny Nott’s allegations, saying the Correctional Service “reasonably employed the security measures required” for his safe and secure absence from the prison.

But…the lawsuit comes after a federal ombudsman called the prison service’s escort vans inhumane and unsafe, and recommended they be replaced

 

Kingston Rebranding

Kingston’s current motto, where history and innovation thrive, could change if city council agrees to hire a consultant to rebrand Kingston.

Mayor Bryan Paterson says the $90,000 rebranding initiative is vital for the city if it wants to attract new business and capitalize on gains the city has already made in tourism.

City staff is recommending a Toronto firm be hired as the consultants.

 

Kimmett – ACTRA nomination

A well-known comedian and actress from Napanee has been nominated for an ACTRA Award.

Deborah Kimmet has been nominated for Outstanding Performance for her dramatic role as an alcoholic woman named Patti in a short film called Keep Coming Back!  It was written, produced and directed by Brendan Brady of Toronto.

The ACTRA Awards will take place in Toronto Saturday, February 23rd.

 

Cruikshank – 110th Birthday

A Kingston woman has celebrated her 110th birthday.

Margaret Cruickshank celebrated the milestone at St. George’s Cathedral yesterday with friends and family.

Cruikshank immigrated to Kingston from England when she was four years old.

She has been attending church at St. George’s ever since.

And the secret to her long life?  Eating her vegetables.
