Needle Exchange

The Union of Canadian Correctional Officers is raising a red flag again about a needle exchange program in federal prisons.  The Correctional Service is introducing the program by January 1st at federal prisons across Canada. The union says it is a threat to the safety of correctional officers, other inmates and even the public.  It says inmates attending parole hearings won’t have to say they were involved in the needle exchange program.  The union says the person could be released from prison as an active drug addict.

It says there is no need for the needle exchange when methadone programs and other measures have contributed to a decline in the rate of infectious diseases in prisons.
