Military – Sexual Misconduct

 

Canada’s top general says…it is good there is reporting of sexual assaults in the military…but it is not good that there is still something to report.  Military authorities received 111 reports of sexual assault between April 1st, 2017, and March 31st of this year- more than double from a year earlier.  The head of the military’s sexual misconduct response team says it indicates service members feel more comfortable about reporting incidents.  But…General Jonathan Vance says he’s unhappy some troops continue to ignore his orders to cease all sexual misconduct.

 

Queen’s Homecoming Weekend

 

It is the Queen’s University Homecoming weekend and it has brought alumni from around the world to Kingston to celebrate reunions and renew friendships.

It is the 50th anniversary of the Faculty of Education and 125th anniversary of the Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science.  Both will have special events taking place throughout the weekend. There will also be many other reunions.

 

Kingston Police says they have scheduled a large contingent of officers to work during homecoming and will try to keep streets open.  The overtime bill is expected to be $80,000.

The city’s ‘nuisance party bylaw’ will be in place meaning anybody who is charged with an offence will have to appear in court and won’t be able to simply pay the fine.

 

Municipal Election

 

About 10 per cent of people who are eligible to vote in the municipal election in Kingston have already marked their ballots.  The city says as of yesterday…4,854 people had voted online and 4,072 at the Advance Voting Day last Saturday.  Internet voting is open until 8pm on Monday…you have to register to vote online by 7pm on Monday.  The polling stations where people can vote in person will be open from 10am to 8pm on Monday.

 

UHKF CEO – Retirement

 

The CEO of the University Hospitals Kingston Foundation is retiring.

The foundations has announced Denise Cummings will be leaving the position in October of next year.

Cummings is the only Chief Executive Officer the foundations has ever had.  She took the position in 2006 and has led two campaigns that have raised nearly $140 million for Kingston’s hospitals.  Recruitment for her successor is now underway.

 

Napanee Angler Heading to US

 

A Napanee woman who has made a career out of fishing is preparing for the big time.

Ashlee Rae and her friend Erik Luzak won the FLW Canada Cup bass fishing tournament on the Bay of Quinte this summer.  Both anglers are travelling to Alabama to represent Canada at the FLW Costa Championship on Lake Guntersville.  They will be fishing as individuals in the tournament that starts on November 1st.

Rae says it will be the first time for her fishing on the legendary lake and she is thrilled to be able to meet anglers from around the world competing in the event.

 

Giveaway Day

 

The city is reminding you tomorrow is another Giveaway Day.

You can put out reusable items to be picked up by neighbours tomorrow in Kingston.  The city says you can put out everything from books, CDs, DVDs, furniture, appliances and even unwanted gifts.

But…Health Canada advises people to avoid baby walkers, cribs, car seats, strollers, bath seats, and other children’s items.
