Uber Kingston

The Kingston Area Taxi Commission bylaw aimed at ride sharing services like Uber is under investigation by the Competition Bureau. The bylaw is on hold and Uber is still operating in Kingston after the competition bureau received a complaint. The bylaw was supposed to kick in on September 15th and would have imposed hefty startup fees, yearly administration fees and licensing fees for the ride sharing services.

 

New CEO – YMCA

The YMCA of Kingston and the YMCA of Brockville and Area have appointed a new Chief Executive Officer to lead them through amalgamation.  Brockville resident Rob Adams has been selected to lead the organization in Kingston and Brockville.  Adams moves into the position from his most recent role at the National Capital Region Y where he was Vice President of Health, Fitness, Aquatics, Child Care and Camping.

Kingston Y CEO Mary Kloosterman is retiring and the secondment period for the CEO of the Y in Brockville is ending.  Adams takes over on October 22nd.

 

Furniture in the Tub

A 33 year old Kingston man is facing charges of break and enter, mischief and breach of probation after being found in a man’s home around 1am on Saturday.

Kingston Police say the man came home, found his place turned upside down, heard water running in the bathroom and found a man going through his fridge.

Police arrested a 33 year old man and say officers found water all over the bathroom floor and furniture piled in the bathtub.

 

Domestic Incidents

Kingston Police have charged two men following two separate domestic violence cases.

Police say a camping trip ending on Sunday night with a disturbance at a home where they found a large mess of clothing and camping gear strewn across the driveway.

A 30 year old Kingston man has been charged with two counts of assault.

A 46 year old man from Seeley’s Bay is facing a charge of assault after police were called to a home north of Kingston late Sunday night and found a woman in a bedroom with visible injuries.

 

Arson – Car Fire

Kingston Police are looking for the public’s help in finding a woman accused of arson.  Around 1am on June 1st, she allegedly approached a man stopped in traffic in Belleville, asking for a ride to Kingston.  He agreed and dropped her off on Queen Street near Division.  Police say she tossed something in the back seat as she got out and the car became engulfed in flames. The woman was last seen walking west on Queen Street.  Anyone with information on the incident is asked to contact police or Crime Stoppers.

 

Martello Towers – Restoration

The Murney Tower national historic site in Kingston is undergoing a major renovation.  Work to restore the limestone walls and moat around the tower is underway.

The work started when the tourist site closed on Labour Day.

It is the first of three Martello Towers in Kingston that will be undergoing restoration work.

The federal government has provided $10 million for upgrades to Parks Canada sites in Kingston.

 

United Way Campaign Update

The final version of the Fare for Friends raised more than $140,000 for the United Way of Kingston, Frontenac, Lennox and Addington.  The event on Sunday has pushed the campaign to 23% of its three million…456 thousand dollar goal.  The total at the end of Monday stood at $781,440.

 

Doggie Dip

The swimming pool at the Memorial Centre will be going to the dogs today.

The Doggie Dip at Tomlinson Aqua Park was so popular last year that it is back for another year.

There is a cost and some rules to follow…details are available through the City of Kingston’s website.

 

Stats Can – SayHello

You may get a phone call from Statistics Canada this week asking you about Kingston’s anti-discrimination programs.  The city says the callers will be collection information about discrimination and awareness of recent community programs like the SayHello campaign.

Participation is voluntary and the information will be kept confidential.  Approximately two thousand residents will be contacted for the survey.
