Prison Farms – Opposition

 

The group called Evolve Our Prison farms is planning a public protest and has launched a formal complaint over the planned sale of milk from Joyceville and Collins Bay Institutions to a Chinese company.

The farms will include up to 1,500 goats and 60 cows.

Evolve our Prison Farms has submitted the formal complaint to Conflict of Interest and Ethics Commissioner Mario Dion, requesting an investigation into the structure, process, and actions of Public Safety Minister Ralph Goodale and the Prison Farm Advisory Panel.  The protest will be held outside Collins Bay Institution August 10th…Prisoners’ Justice Day.  It has also distributed 8,000 postcards to be sent to Goodale in protest.

Evolve Our Prison Farms wants only plant based agriculture at the prisons.

 

Four Candidates for Mayor

 

In case you missed it on Friday…there are now four candidates running for mayor in Kingston and the Ontario government isn’t forcing any changes in districts for Kingston.

Former city councillor Vicki Schmolka filed her nominations papers before the deadline on Friday.  She joins former councillor Rob Matheson, Eric Lee and Mayor Brian Patterson as candidates for the mayor’s position in the October 22nd election.  There will be races in each of Kingston’s districts except for Pittsburgh where Ryan Boehme will return to council after nobody came forward to challenge him in the election.

 

Group of Seven – School Board

 

A group of seven candidates who want more openness is running for the Limestone District School Board.  The candidates registered for the election on Friday and held a demonstration on the steps of Kingston city hall.

The seven candidates are running on a platform of education first, accountability to the electorate and commitment to the community.

Recreational Pot

 

Napanee’s medical marijuana producer has introduced its first recreational cannabis brand.

ABcann says its brand called FIRESIDE will ensure superior quality marijuana grown in small batches in craft-like conditions.  The company says its long curing process also means a smother final product.  It will be available in three varieties.

 

FIRESIDE Black:  a high THC product

FIRESIDE Red:  a medium THC product

FIRESIDE Gold:  a balanced THC/CBD product

Taste of Kingston

 

Confederation Park was a tasty place on Sunday with the 20th annual Taste of Kingston.

Local restaurants provided the food for the fund raising event.

It’s expected to bring in around $40,000 to help send kids with type one diabetes to camp.

 

Road Repairs

 

Princess Street westbound is closed at Portsmouth Avenue this morning and Portsmouth Ave. is closed from Princess to Glengarry while crews repair the intersection of Princess and Portsmouth.

It was damaged by a water main break on Friday.  The city says it expects the work to last until late this afternoon and suggests you take an alternate route.
