Green Candidate – May – Kiley

The Green Party Candidate for Kingston and the Islands in the Ontario election is hosting Green Party of Canada leader Elizabeth May today.  May will visit the KTECT Canada Sustainable Business Solutions facility this afternoon and will attend the official opening of Robert Kiley’s campaign office.

There is also a fund raising dinner tonight at the Holiday Inn Waterfront billed as “An Evening with Elizabeth May and Robert Kiley.”

Provincial Leaders Debate

If you’re interested in the outcome of the Ontario election in June – The first televised debate featuring all three major provincial party leaders will be broadcast on City TV.

Doug Ford, Andrea Horwath and Kathleen Wynne have all agreed to take part in the live debate on Monday, May 7th from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m.

It will air commercial free on City, CityNews.ca, the CityNews Apps and the CityNews Facebook page.

Rideau Heights Centre Opening

The first big step in revitalizing the Rideau Heights neighbourhood will celebrate its grand opening tomorrow.

The new Rideau heights Community Centre and Library is holding a day of activities for its grand opening at 85 MacCauley Street.

The Boys and Girls Club, Seniors Association, Loving Spoonful and Limestone District School Board will all be offering programming through the centre on a year round basis.  The facilities include a gym, community kitchen, lounge areas, a multi-purpose room, a recording studio….and it is home to Kingston’s newest library.

Youth Summit

Young people will invade Kingston City Hall today.

The fourth annual Youth Summit is taking place from 10am to 1:30 this afternoon in Memorial Hall.  It has been organized by the Youth Out Loud Kingston and Area Youth Council and the United Way.

The Forum will feature breakout sessions where young people will discuss topics including Substance Abuse, Mental Health, Conflict Resolution, Financial Literacy and Civic Engagement.

Loyalist – Pot Course

Loyalist College in Belleville will launch the first program of its kind in Canada to study marijuana.  The province has approved the funding for the eight month long Cannabis Applied Science post-graduation certificate.  The program will focus on using green technology instead of solvents to extract the active ingredients in marijuana.  It is aimed at students who already have a college diploma or university degree and officials believe it will be popular with marijuana set to become legal in Canada this summer.
Close Call – Transport Wheels

There’s been a close call for motorists on the 401 in Leeds and Thousand Islands Township where a transport truck lost its rear dual set of wheels.  The truck stopped on the side of the highway Wednesday night and the OPP says officers found the two missing wheels behind where it stopped.

The 21 year old woman driving the transport has been charged under the Highway Traffic Act.

Snack-Theft

A 35 year old Kingston man who had a criminal case of the munchies is facing charges.

Kingston Police says they found a man coming out of a hole cut in a fence at compound in an industrial area around 2:15 yesterday morning with a garbage bag full of chips, dip and salsa.

Police say the stuff was taken from a dumpster.  The man has been charged with break and enter, theft and possession of break in tools.

Researcher – Funding

A researcher at Queen’s University has received $2 million to continue his review of primary health care in Ontario.  Michael Green and his collaborator, Rick Glazier are studying how to improve access to primary care in Ontario.  They’ll lead a team of more than 30 primary care researchers from across Ontario.

The $2 million in funding comes from the Ontario Health System Research Fund.

New Paint – Queen’s

A new type of environmentally friendly paint has been developed at Queen’s University.

The new paint is water based – but the inventors say it acts more like oil based paint and performs better than latex paint.  The solvent being used in the new paint is actually carbonated water.

Philip Jessop, the Canada Research Chair in Green Chemistry, and his research team are currently working with GreenCentre Canada in Kingston and a paint and coating company to refine the technology.

Earth Day – Kingston

The Cataraqui Region Conservation Authority is hosting several activities this weekend to mark Earth Day including an Indigenous ceremony and Trailsong performance by Young Choristers Limestone.

First Nations teacher Paul Carl will conduct a smudging ceremony at the Little Cataraqui Creek Conservation Area at 2 p.m. on Saturday.  The Young Choristers will perform as they hike around the Chickadee Trail starting at 2 p.m. on Sunday.

Earth Day Kingston is celebrating on Sunday at Belle Park in Kingston.

A post on the Sustainable Kingston website says there will be yoga, drumming circles, arts and crafts and educational activities from 1pm to 5pm.
