Union – Lockdown

The union representing correctional officers says several members at Joyceville Institution came into contact with fentanyl last week.

The union is upset it took two days for the assessment unit to be locked down and searched.

The lockdown is now over and a normal routine has resumed at Joyceville.

Goat – Killed on 401

A sad end for the goat that has been wandering around the Kingston area.

It was killed last night when it was hit by a transport truck on the 401 between Sir John A. Macdonald Boulevard and Sydenham Road.

The transport driver wasn’t injured.

The goat had been seen wandering on streets in the Sydenham Road area and on the 401 since late August and there was just a report it had been spotted on McIvor Road before it was hit by the truck.

Dogs Stabbed

Two dogs have recovered from stab wounds and Kingston Police are hoping to solve the mystery of who stabbed the dogs.

They were stabbed in their backyard on Castell Road after 5pm on September 11th…and approximately two weeks before that.  Police say the backyard is fenced and the property is lined with vegetation.

It’s believed the dogs were stabbed by something that was pushed through the fence.

Both dogs were treated by a veterinarian for non-life threatening injuries.

Anyone with information is being asked to contact Detective Wills at Kingston Police.

PeaceQuest – Nuclear Treaty

PeaceQuest Kingston is encouraging people to join a campaign to eliminate nuclear weapons as the North Korean threat grows.  Canada has refused to participate in the idea of developing a treaty.

Large copies of a treaty to prohibit nuclear weapons will be available for people to sign starting at 11 this morning at University and Union Streets.

Milnes – Mulroney Institute

A Kingston historian has been named the Official Archivist of the Rt. Hon. Brian Mulroney Institute at St. Francis Xavier University in Nova Scotia.

Art Milnes has been chosen to run the archives for institute named after the former prime minister.  Milnes wrote Mulroney’s official biography.

He says the former Prime Minister and his family have raised $100 million for the public policy school for undergraduates at St. Francis Xavier University.  The official groundbreaking is today.  Milnes says he isn’t moving from Kingston…at least not for the time being.

Queen’s – Gondar

Queen’s University and the University of Gondar in Ethiopia will officially launch a partnership with the MasterCard Foundation today.

Under the partnership…450 African students will become MasterCard Scholars and receive an education at the University of Gondar.

Queen’s will provide 60 University of Gondar faculty members with an opportunity to study in Kingston…and collaborate on developing Ethiopia’s first occupational therapy program.

Integrity Commissioner Hired

Kingston City Council has approved hiring a legal firm to be its integrity advisor.

Council approved hiring ‘Principles Integrity’ when it met last night.

Mayor Bryan Paterson says the province has mandated every municipality must have an integrity commissioner available to investigate complaints and advise councillors.

Council – Belle Park

There will no longer be golf at Belle Park.

City council voted last night to close the city owned nine hole golf course.

A master plan will be developed for future recreational use of the property including rugby, pickleball and trails.
