401 Closed

Crashes on the 401 caused traffic chaos on the highway in the Kingston area today.

The 401 eastbound was closed at Montreal Street.

The westbound 401 was closed at Joyceville Road.

The westbound lanes were re-opened at 8:30 this morning.

The eastbound lanes had already closed between Joyceville Road and Highway 32 in Gananoque after a crash involving multiple vehicles overnight.

Police haven’t released any details about the crashes.

Wrong Way Fatal – Charges

A 16 year old boy from Belleville has been charged in the crash that claimed the life of a woman from Loyalist Township early Sunday morning.

The youth has been charged with Manslaughter, Criminal Negligence Causing Bodily Harm and Theft of a Motor Vehicle.

The OPP says a pickup truck westbound on the eastbound 401 at 1:20 a.m. Sunday when it collided head on with a Subaru.

A 30 year old man from Dryden was driving the car and remains in serious condition in hospital.

The 30 year old woman from Loyalist Township was a passenger in the car and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Fires

A gofundme page has been established to help a family who lost everything in a fire on Sandhill Road.

Their home is a pile of rubble after the fire Wednesday night.

The cause of the fire hasn’t been determined.

Kingston Fire and Rescue estimates the damage at $500,000.

The gofundme page set up to help the Smith family has already raised over $10,000.

A barn on Woodburn Road has been destroyed by fire.

The fire was reported by a passerby around 5:40 yesterday morning.

There was no livestock in the barn.  It was being used for storage and damage is estimated at $150,000.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

 

Kingston – Students Arrive

Thousands of students will be descending on Kingston to start their school year starting this weekend.

Move-in Day at Queen’s is this Sunday.

The university says over 4,200 first year students will be moving into residences.

It also kicks off Orientation week and all kinds of activities on the Queen’s campus for students to prepare for their first semester.

Students are also preparing for Orientation at St. Lawrence College.  Unlike Queen’s – orientation at the college is limited to one day.

It includes a welcoming rally in the morning and lunch and outdoor games at Lake Ontario Park.

City – Students

The city has set up a special section on its website to help students who are new to Kingston or area returning to the city.

It has detailed information about everything from Kingston Transit and Utilities Kingston to garbage and recycling collection with links to various services.

BGCK – Donation

The Boys and Girls Club of Kingston and Area will be getting a significant contribution from Homestead Landholdings today.  The Kingston based apartment rental giant is donating 50 thousand dollars a year for the next eight years to support free programming for youths 13 years old and older.

The money will fund The Homestead Kids Zone at the Boys and Girls Club location in the Frontenac Mall.

Labour Day

Monday is Labour Day and a holiday for a lot of people.

Kingston Transit will operate on a Sunday schedule on Monday except for route 18 which will run on a weekday schedule.

There’s no garbage or recycling collection and municipal offices will be closed on Monday.

It is not a mandatory holiday for retail – so – most stores will be open in Kingston right through the long weekend.
