Robbery Update

Kingston Police Detectives have received numerous tips following a robbery at the Kawartha Credit Union on July 4th.  Detective James Veltman says they have one solid lead right now.

A man entered the Credit Union around 12:15 Tuesday afternoon…indicated he had a weapon…demanded cash and took off with an undisclosed quantity of money.

Police have released pictures of the suspect and a cream coloured Chrysler 300 that was used for the getaway after the man ditched a bicycle he used to leave the scene of the robbery.

Rowing Club – Vandalism – gofundme

The Kingston Rowing Club has set up a gofundme page to raise money after vandals hit again.

Volunteers who work with the club are hoping to raise 25 thousand dollars.

One of the club’s boats used by the coaches was vandalized this week.  It was found beached down the river from the club early yesterday morning – the wiring had been cut and destroyed and will have to be replaced.

This follows the theft of the clubs truck used to transport rowing skulls to competitions.  The truck has been recovered but needs thousands in repairs.

The club says the fundraiser will help with repairs for the truck and boat and may even help with the cost of a new roof for the boathouse.

History File

From Tony’s Today in History File…the P4W closes in Kingston.

It was on this day…July 6th…2000…that Kingston’s infamous Prison for Women closed its doors.

A private ceremony was held to mark the end of a short but turbulent history at the prison.  It was the only facility in Canada for women serving sentences of two or more years and had been in operation for 66 years.

It was sold to Queen’s University when it closed and the walls were torn down…but the university hasn’t developed the property.
