Soccer Nets – Safety Update

The City of Kingston says all of the city’s soccer nets will be inspected to make sure they are properly anchored following the death of a 15 year old boy in Napanee.

Garrett Mills died on May 12th when the soccer net he was doing chin ups on tipped over.  The crossbar landed on his head and killed him instantly.  The net wasn’t anchored to the ground and there is no provincial regulation requiring nets be anchored.

A news release from the city says Garrett’s death has highlighted the issue of soccer net safety.

The city says nets are inspected on a weekly basis and both permanent and portable nets are all anchored.

Queen’s University will be inspecting all of its nets and the local school boards say they will also have their nets inspected.

No Criminal Act

There is no evidence the death of a cat found at the Parrots Bay Conservation area was the result of a criminal act according to the OPP and OSPCA.

A news release from the OPP says an investigation by detectives and inspectors with the Ontario Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals was not able to find any indication the located animal remains were that of a criminal act.

The remains were found at the popular conservation area on April 4th.

Police say the investigation will remain open in the event new information is brought forward.
