OMB Hearing

The Ontario Municipal Board hearing into the Capitol Condo in downtown Kingston won’t take place until March of next year.

Ten days has been scheduled for the hearing starting on March 26th of 2018.

The date was announced at a pre-hearing held in Kingston yesterday.

Funding

Kingston and the Islands MP Mark Gerretsen has announced funding of $6.5 million for nine projects in Kingston.

MPP Sophie Kiwala announced the Ontario government is contributing $3.2 million.

The city is picking up the other $3.2 million dollars for the infrastructure projects.

The work includes construction of a new water main on Taylor-Kidd Boulevard, repairs to the roofs of two digesters (that is being taken care by the Best roofing contractor Indianapolis) at the Ravensview Wastewater Treatment Plant, and a structural integrity assessment of a water tower. Funding was also announced for six projects in Amherstview and Bath.

Accidental Death

A 57 year old Prince Edward County man has died after the vehicle he was working on collapsed on top of him.

The OPP says the man was doing maintenance on the vehicle at a home on County Road 18 in Athol Ward around noon on Monday when he was pinned under the vehicle.

Willie Peterson was taken to hospital where he later died of his injuries.

Amherstview Man – Flight Diverted

A man from Amherstview charged with interfering with the flight crew on a plane from Jamaica was high on cocaine according to his attorney.

The attorney for 34 year old Brandon Michael Courneyea told a judge in Orlando, Courneyea is very remorseful about what happened.  He asked the judge to release Courneyea to his father’s custody so he can return to Canada.

The flight was diverted to Orlando after a man attacked the crew with coffee pots and tried to open a cabin door.

Attempted Murder

Kingston Police say a man from Florida has been charged with an attempted murder after an argument at a home in Kingston got out of control.

Kingston Police say the man from Florida and two women…one from Pennsylvania and one from New York State…were staying with a Kingston man after the four met through an online gaming site.

Police say the 34 year old man from Florida had been arguing with the woman from Pennsylvania for two days and attacked her on Monday.  He has been charged with assault, assault with a weapon and attempted murder.

Sexual Assault

A 26 year old Kingston massage therapist has been charged with sexual assault. Police were contacted on May 17th by a woman claiming the man had touched her inappropriately. The accused turned himself into police today. He was released on a promise to appear in court at a later date.

Bridge Dedication

The bridge over the 4-0-1 at Joyceville Road will be dedicated in memory of an O-P-P officer who died while on duty.  46 year-old Detective-Constable Richard Robinson died suddenly in Buffalo, New York from natural causes four years ago today.  Robinson was a native of Smiths Falls. He lived with his wife and two children in Gananoque and worked out of Lansdowne.

OPP Commissioner Vince Hawkes will officially dedicate the bridge in Robinson’s memory at 11 this morning at a ceremony the Colonnade Golf and Country Club in Joyceville.

Napanee Bear

A black bear has been removed from a tree on Marilyn Street in Napanee.

The Ministry of Natural Resources was able to tranquilize the bear on Monday morning and remove it from the tree.  It was transported to an area outside of the town and released.

The OPP is reminding people to take simple precautions to prevent attracting black bears…like keeping food, garbage and even bird seed away from populated areas.
