Search – Possible Drowning

Kingston Police were waiting for the OPP dive team to arrive last night after the search for a man in the water near the LaSalle Causeway was called off.  Kingston Fire and Rescue says witnesses saw a man struggling to stay above water but he disappeared after a brief rescue attempt by one of the witnesses. Emergency services responded to the call about the man going under the water and not resurfacing around 8:10 last night.

Kingston Fire and Rescue, The Canadian Coastguard and a helicopter searched the area and the causeway was down to one lane of traffic.

Sajjan – Defence Review

Defence Minister Harjit Sajjan has announced tax breaks for all military personnel and police officers deployed on major operations abroad.  Sajjan made the announcement in a speech delivered during graduation at the Royal Military College in Kingston.

The salaries of military personnel and police officers sent overseas on major operations will be exempted from federal income tax for the duration of their deployments and is retroactive to January 1st.

KP and POH Vision

The preferred concept that will guide development on the Kingston Penitentiary property and the Portsmouth Olympic Harbour will be unveiled during two public presentations next week.

The sessions are being held at the Olympic Harbour Thursday afternoon and Thursday evening.

Presentations will be made to explain how the decision was made and a question and answer period will follow the presentations.

Garage Fire

Fire has destroyed a garage and vehicle in the 2000 block of Highway 2.

Kingston Fire & Rescue says crews found the garage fully engulfed in fire when they arrived around 10:30 yesterday morning.

The garage collapsed with the homeowners 2016 Honda CRV inside.

Damage is estimated at $75,000.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Victoria Day

The city is hosting Victoria Day celebrations at Lake Ontario Park on Monday.

Activities will start at 1p.m and will wrap up at 9:30.  The city is providing a fireworks finale and says food trucks will be on site and there will be free live entertainment throughout the day.

Bellevue House

Some of Kingston’s seasonal tourist attractions are opening this weekend.

Bellevue House National Historic Site will be free for people to tour.  Sir John A. Macdonald’s home is operated by Parks Canada and is one of the attractions open for free to celebrate the 150th anniversary of Confederation.  Bellevue house opens tomorrow.

Murney Tower Opens

The Murney Tower Museum opens today.

The museum is inside the tower that was built in 1846 as part of the defensive network of Martello towers built by the British to protect Kingston from an attack by the US.

It’s owned by Parks Canada but operated by the Kingston Historical Society.

Artist Don Connolly has produced a special Canada 150 anniversary painting that will be unveiled at the opening ceremony this morning.
