Countryside Byelection

 

It’s election day for the residents of Countryside District in Kingston.

Seven people are in the running to fill the empty seat at Kingston City Council.

Polls are open from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. at the three fire halls in Countryside.

Online voting is also available until 8 tonight.

The byelection is being held to replace Richard Allen who resigned in December to become the economic development manager in Frontenac County.

 

Youth Dies

 

A sad story from Napanee where a 15 year old boy died after an accident in a park on Friday.

Garret Mills died in the park at 217 King Street in Napanee shortly after 5:00 Friday afternoon.

The boy’s father is Dave Mills…a well-known entertainer who uses the stage name Buzz Collins.

Napanee Mayor Gordon Schermerhorn issued a statement on Saturday saying he was heartbroken by the news.  He passed along condolences to the boy’s family and friends.

An autopsy will be performed at Ottawa General Hospital this morning.

Funeral arrangements haven’t been announced yet.

 

Crash Victims

 

A vigil has been held at the Compton Street home of one of the victims of the multi-vehicle crash on the 401 westbound near Joyceville Road early last Thursday.

All of the victims were from Kingston…They’ve been identified as Pierre Courville, Christine Hanrahan Courville, her son Mitchell Caird and his friend…Zack James.

Two people also suffered series injuries in the crash.

GoFundMe pages have been set up to help both families.

A 37 year old transport truck driver from Quebec has been charged with four counts of dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing death and two counts of dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing bodily harm.

Fire – Careless Smoking

 

Careless smoking is being blamed for a fire in an apartment building on Runnymede Road.  Kingston Fire and Rescue was called to 10 Runnymede Street around 8:30 Friday night after smoke was reported in the building.

Firefighters found a fire near a water heater that had created a large amount of smoke.  Damage is estimated at $5,000.

No injuries were reported.

 

Lockdown – Collins Bay

 

The lockdown put in place at the maximum-security unit of Collins Bay Institution on May 9th has ended.

An exceptional search was ordered after a fight that sent several inmates to hospital with injuries.

A news release says the search turned up a number of unauthorized items and the institution resumed normal operations on Friday.

 

Senate Committee – Correctional System

 

A senate committee investigating the human rights of prison inmates will be meeting in Kingston today.

The fact finding mission for the Committee on Human Rights is part of a comprehensive study of living conditions, the segregation practices and re-integration tools being used in the correctional system.

A public hearing starts at 6 p.m. and a town hall session starts at 8 tonight at the Delta Hotel Kingston Waterfront.
