LCBO

The President of the Union representing staff at the L-C-B-O says you don’t need to stock up yet even though the employees have voted 93 per cent in favour of a strike.

OPSEU President Smokey Thomas says it means the union has a strong mandate from the workers when it comes to bargaining for a new contract.

The contract ran out last month and Thomas says the union hopes to avoid a strike at the LCBO by successfully bargaining for a new deal.

Collins Bay – Lockdowns End

Two separate lockdowns at Collins Bay Institution are over.

The Correctional Service says searches in both the medium security and maximum security units turned up a number of unauthorized items.

No reason was given for the lockdown in the medium security unit that started on April 18th.  The lockdown and search of the maximum security unit took place after an inmate was injured in a fight on April 20th.

Gutowski – Settlement

The former warden of Frontenac County who sued her colleagues for defamation has settled the million dollar lawsuit.  Lawyers representing Janet Gutowski and three county councillors reached for a pre settlement funding service last week with the help of a mediator.  Details can’t be made public because of a confidentiality agreement.

Gutowski was the mayor of Central Frontenac and warden of Frontenac County when four councillors accused her of influence peddling in May of 2013.  She asked for an apology…didn’t get one and launched the lawsuit.

The Tragically Hip – Swag Alert

The Tragically Hip is warning fans to be careful about buying merchandise from online sellers who claim a portion of the money will go to Gord Downie’s cancer charity.

Lead guitarist Rob Baker posted a message on Twitter yesterday saying the claims that $10 goes to the charity are B.S.

United Way

The United Way of Kingston, Frontenac, Lennox and Addington has honoured hundreds of volunteers.

The agency handed out volunteer awards yesterday.

The United Way also introduced Pat Murphy of Secura Financial as the chair of the 2017 fund raising campaign.

Murphy takes the reigns from 2016 chair Brigadier-General Stephen Kelsey who led the successful 75th anniversary campaign.  The campaign last year raised $3.7 million dollars…about $250,000 more than the goal.

This year’s 12-week campaign will kick off on Friday, September 8th.
