Mayor – Third Crossing

Kingston Mayor Bryan Paterson says he’s in favour of the Third Crossing as long as it doesn’t mean an increase in property taxes.

Paterson says the city has several road and infrastructure projects planned for the coming years, and the Third Crossing will have to fit within this plan.

Paterson has posted his official position on his website and says he wants your feedback.

The city is hosting open houses on April 26th and 27th to update the public on the cost and planning for the bridge over the Cataraqui River.

Historic Sexual Assault

A 55 year old Kingston man has been charged with sexually assaulting a 15 year old girl in 2013.  Kingston Police say they received information regarding sexual offences on Friday and arrested the man without incident Friday night.

He has been charged with sexual assault, indecent exposure, invitation to sexual touching and sexual interference.  Police say charges are in connection with sexual assaults that took place in the summer of 2013 at a residence north of Kingston.

Domestic Assault

A 32 year old Kingston man has been charged after police uncovered two incidents where his common law partner was assaulted…including one where he dragged her into a secluded area near John Counter Boulevard and Leroy Grand Drive and threatened to kill her.

He has been charged with possession of stolen property, three counts of assault with a weapon, uttering death threats, forcible confinement, and breach probation.

Grass Fire

A major grass and brush fire north of Bath closed down County Road 7 and halted train service between Odessa and Napanee.

Loyalist Township firefighters battled the blaze along County Road 7 for about two hours before yesterday afternoon.

Firefighters believe a train passing through the area sparked the fire.

Ryandale Shelter Closing

The board of Ryandale Shelter has announced its Elm Street shelter will close for good on April 30th.

It says Kingston’s homelessness initiative has reduced the need to operate the shelter and the city is cutting its funding.

Ryandale will continue to operate a seven bed transitional house for men on Victoria Street.

Its 15 bed Elm Street shelter has been in operation for over 25 years and Ryandale will hold an open house next month to thank employees, volunteers, residents, donors, and community partners for their years of support.

Boy Rescued

Emergency crews were scrambled when a 17 year old wound up in the water off Long Point in Prince Edward County when his homemade raft sank.

The raft sank in the water between the Point and Timber Island around 4 yesterday afternoon.

A chopper from CFB Trenton Search and Rescue, a Coast Guard boat, paramedics and firefighters were dispatched to the scene.

Prince Edward County firefighters were able to pick up the 17 year old male in a rescue boat and he was taken to hospital in Picton for assessment.
