Rainfall – Flooding

Conservation authority officials and police are asking people to stay away from fast flowing waterways after heavy rainfall throughout the region.  The water is dangerously cold and flowing very fast in creeks and rivers.

Lakes, rivers and creeks are spilling over their banks and there is lots of flooding in low lying areas throughout the Kingston region.  40 mm of rain was recorded at the Kingston airport yesterday.

Shooting – Standoff – SIU

Kingston Police say the woman injured by a man who died in a standoff on Compton Street was the estranged spouse of the 52 year old man.

Police have revealed the man attacked the woman as she walked along Beverley Street with her bicycle around 3:15 Tuesday afternoon.  They say the man had been cruising around the area in his SUV looking for the woman.  He grabbed her and forced her into the vehicle where he hit her in the face with a shotgun.

She managed to get free and ran to a home on Beverley Street.  Two shots were fired at her but they missed and slammed into the home.

The man left the scene and went to a unit at 100 Compton Street where the standoff took place.

The Special Investigations Unit is investigating the death of the man during that standoff with Kingston Police.

Aircraft – Emergency Landing

Smoke in the cockpit forced a twin engine aircraft carrying two people to make an emergency landing at the Kingston airport.  The aircraft belonging to Transport Canada was flying to Montreal from Toronto when it made the emergency landing in Kingston at around 3 p.m. Thursday.

Kingston Fire and Rescue says its pumpers escorted the aircraft as it safely landed and crews monitored the situation until the aircraft was shut down.  The two men on board were not injured.  There’s no word on what caused the smoke in the cockpit of the aircraft.

Spooner Road Fire

Officials say the cause of a fire that destroyed a home on Spooner Road hasn’t been determined.  Homeowner Elwood Richards believes it started with an electrical problem in a bedroom of the home late Wednesday night.  The home was engulfed in flames when firefighters arrived.

Damage is estimated at $250,000.

The home wasn’t insured and Richards company… Leslie M. Higginson Surveying Ltd. has set up a GoFundMe page help the family of five that is now homeless.

Habitat – Grand Opening

Kingston’s new Habitat for Humanity ReStore will be celebrating its grand opening on Saturday.

Habitat for Humanity Canada President and CEO Mark Rodgers is scheduled to speak at 11 tomorrow morning at the ReStore at 607 Gardiners Road.  Habitat homeowner Krista Abbink will also be speaking at the grand opening.
Youth Summit

The third annual Youth Summit takes place today in Memorial Hall at Kingston City Hall.

The summit has been organized by Youth Out Loud Kingston and Area Youth Council and is expected to involve about 60 young people today.

The session is aimed at raising awareness about issues faced by youth in Kingston.

Fitness Fights Kids Cancer

People in Kingston will be raising money for the Kingston Fitness Fights Kids Cancer this weekend.  Apex Indoor Cycling is holding an 8 hour spinathon.  Crossfit Limestone and the Kingston Athletic Therapy Centre are also holding events.

All proceeds will be donated to the children’s cancer fund at KGH and Camp Trillium.
