Child Assault

Kingston Police say a 38 year old man has been charged after investigators saw video of him assaulting a child.  Police received a complaint from Family and Children’s Services on March 6.

A news release says detectives began an investigation and learned the 6-year-old child had been assaulted by his mother’s boyfriend on June 5th of 2016. The assault was captured on video and showed the man overtop of the child striking him in the face and biting his hand.  The man was arrested at his residence in Kingston on Wednesday and charged with assault.

Habitat Theft

Habitat for Humanity of Kingston and Frontenac has had a break-in at its new location. Thieves broke into a storage container at the ReStore on Gardiners Road last weekend and stole about $6,000 worth of power tools. Some of the items have Habitat for Humanity labels.  Anyone with information about the theft is being asked to contact Kingston Police or Crime Stoppers.

The new ReStore locations will be holding its official opening on Saturday, April 8.

High School Burnout

Too cool for school…but the burnout coming out of the parking lot in Sydenham has resulted in a 17 year old being charged with Stunt Driving.

A Frontenac OPP officer was conducting a traffic patrol in Sydenham during the noon hour on Tuesday.  The officer saw a Chevy Cavalier leave the parking lot southbound onto Wheatley Street.

The young driver was charged with stunt driving for deliberately smoking the tires. His license was suspended for a week and the vehicle was impounded for a week.

Affordable Housing Event

The official opening of Kingston’s newest affordable housing complex takes place this morning.

Kingston and the Islands MP Mark Gerretsen, MPP Sophie Kiwala and City Councillor Liz Schell will be on hand for the opening at 40 Cliff Crescent at 9 a.m. today.

Kids for Kids

The Kingston area is welcoming about 10,000 visitors for the Kids for Kids Hockey Tournament this weekend.  It’s estimated the 20th annual tournament will generate more than two million dollars for the local economy.  The hockey action is headquartered at the Invista Centre and organizers expect to raise over $50,000 for charity.  The money will be split between the Boys and Girls Club and the pediatrics department at Kingston General Hospital.

New Hospital

Providence Care is inviting former patients and friends to celebrations at St. Mary’s of the Lake Hospital and Mental Health Services…the former Kingston Psychiatric Hospital…tomorrow.

The celebrations will take place in the main lobbies of the two hospitals as they prepare to close.  Another ceremony will take place at the new Providence Care Hospital at 3 tomorrow afternoon.

That will be followed by an open house and public tours of the new hospital.  Patients from the old hospitals will be moved in on April 23rd.

Science Fair

The Frontenac, Lennox and Addington Science Fair wraps up today at McArthur Hall.  Approximately 290 students from 21 schools are showing off their work.  Public viewing is scheduled for today from 10 a.m. to noon.

The students in grades 5 to 12 are competing for awards and their project are evaluated by approximately 250 judges from the local science community who have volunteered their time for the 2-day fair.
