Go Fund Me Campaign

A group of people in Kingston who oppose high rise development in the downtown area has launched a GoFundMe campaign to finance its case at the Ontario Municipal Board.
Vision Kingston is trying to raise $5,000 to fight the Capitol condo development.
The fund raising post on the internet based fund raising site says the next pre-hearing is set for May 23rd and it is launching its Take it to the Streets campaign to allow people to support the cost of an urban design specialist with expertise in the development of vibrant, inclusive, people-first cities.

Salvation Army – Purple Posse

The Salvation Army Rideau Heights Corps is launching a new initiative to support women in crisis and spread awareness about violence against women. A group of women known as the Purple Posse came together last year. Today they’ll be launching and handing out Purple Posse Safety Cards. The cards list agencies where women can get help in Kingston. Representatives of the agencies will speak before a kickoff event at 11 this morning at the Salvation Army Rideau Heights Corps on Weller Avenue. It will also hold an information session from 9am to noon on Monday.

Napanee – Traffic Roundup

Napanee OPP say they seized 15 vehicles during a 48 hour period on the weekend.
Ten drivers were charged with going at least 50km/h over the speed limit….one was going 160 in an 80 zone.
Four people were charged with driving with a suspended license.
One driver was arrested for impaired operation of a motor vehicle at a RIDE Program
And…A 31 year old man and a 29 year old woman from Belleville were arrested for being in possession of 20 grams of cocaine at a RIDE Program spot check.

Driver Charged – 15 yr. old

A 15 year old boy has been charged with dangerous driving causing bodily harm after a single vehicle crash on Perth Road near Ritchie Road early Sunday morning.
Police were called to the crash scene shortly after 4am and found a 19 year old female passenger trapped in the vehicle. She was taken to hospital with serious injuries.

Break-Ins – Arrests

Kingston Police have arrested four people after a series of break-ins at a business on Dalton Avenue.
Police staked out the business early last Thursday morning. A 30 year old Kingston man was arrested at about 1:30 in the morning breaking into the property. Three other men were caught breaking into the same property at around 4:00 a.m. All face a variety of charges involving the break-ins.

Trudeau – Thousand Islands National Park

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau will be visiting Thousand Islands National Park near Gananoque today. The prime minister is expected to make comments about the recent budget and its support of Canada’s National Parks and historic sites. The parks are also offering Canadians free passes for this season as part of Canada 150 celebrations.

From Tony’s Today in history file…a young man who would become Canada’s first prime minister starts his political journey in Kingston 174 years ago today. On March 28th, 1843…John A. Macdonald was elected as an alderman in Kingston. About a year and a half later he was elected as the Conservative representative for Kingston in the Legislative Assembly for the Province of Canada.
